Made in the USA, and designed by Kim Laube Inc. a clipper of innovative design and which despite a history of annoying faults and unnecessary problems has successfully penetrated most professional clipping circles especially dog grooming parlours and clipping of show cattle.

The Laube 503 is identical to the 513 models, except that it has a two-speed motor rather than a variable speed motor. Often used with a wide blade on horses or show cattle - beef or dairy, and popular in busy dog grooming parlours.

The 503 Laube has the built-in facility of two operating speeds, a standard speed for precision clipping and a faster clip speed for those who want to speed up the operation. This can be a useful facility when confronted with a variation in fibre texture. An important feature of these machines is the constant cool running ability even under prolonged use.

Ultra light, and comfortable to the handle they can afford the operator effortless clipping. Low noise level, thus ideal for any nervous animal, particularly horses. Laube clippers incorporate the detachable "snap-on" blade technology, which avoids fiddling about aligning both the cutter and comb. Laube clippers have a long history of often small, but highly annoying problems. Costs can escalate with repairs and therefore they are really not for "Widows and orphans!" We are told these have been re-dressed, and there is some evidence to suggest that is the case, but other faults then occur and as a result one sees too many Laube clippers back for repairs. Some of the problems in fairness is end-user carelessness and neglect, but a fair degree is down to the manufacturer.

The slogan on the packaging "World Class" might seem - ambitious! This is all very regrettable as this is a range of clipper, which could have swept the animal clipping world if only they performed in a more reliable manner. Hence the fact we are reluctant to award a higher rating.

Virtually identical to the Laube model 555 but shorter and without a battery much lighter. A useful mains addition to the range, which could appeal to many horse owners due to the compact nature and small size. Considerably lighter than many other mains machines of its size and power and as a result gives the impression of being comfortable to the handle.

Some field trials carried out on an unwashed summer coated fell pony using a Wahl/Moser wide 2.3 2mm blade proved impressive, however the production model we received to used was not one of the quietest, in fact surprisingly noisy especially at the higher end of the speed ratio, and as such we would have reservations about recommend it for really nervous animals, particularly horses.

Any horse owner thinking about this machine will need to rethink the speed at which they clip when using this type of machine or indeed any clipper of the type fitted with "detachable" blades - whether ceramic or steel. You do need a relaxed approach to your clipping speed - if not tramlines will soon appear. Short strokes are better than longer ones, and work across the hair as well as with the "grain".

The main reason for this is the choice of wide blades available. Compared to the number of blades for dog grooming the choice is limited, particularly so when dealing with some of the more "hairy" and heavy coated native horse breeds! The Moser 2.3mm - CeraBlade or the 2.3mm steel wide blades - are often found to be the best currently available for use on horse especially.

When using the "detachable" blade style clippers one should be aware no matter how good they are they are not of the same power as a typical traditional type machines. Invariably one is using this type of clipper because the horse objects for whatever reason to a traditional noisy machine. Seen in this role as an alternative to not clipping or heavy sedation they are extremely valuable and with proper use and application perform as well as any traditional clipper, producing some quality clips on a range of horse or cattle breeds.

Practical experience as with most clipping of any animal is invaluable! Knowledge is never complete - no matter how experienced the operator!

The Moser "Horseline" Artiko is a cloned copy of the highly successful Moser Max 45 - one of the most powerful dog clippers on the market.

The Artiko inherits all these qualities and with the "improved" ceramic blade technology it should justify the increased price, and will certainly often prove to be the difference between clipping or not on many a nervous animal.

The newly launched Cera ceramic coated blade with a longer clipping life is a welcomed introduction, however some evidence suggests whilst they work perfectly on most breeds of horses - a few - thick coated cobs and natives - can presents problems!

The ceramic-coated blade is not the same as the pure ceramic blade sets used by some of the dog groomers. This is a steel blade coated with ceramic powder, which as a result give increased performance and is said to stay sharper for longer. Subsequent lapping (sharpening) will wear away the ceramic coating in time, however one still has a very useful steel blade when this happens.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
When first introduced back in the 1990's it was considered amazing that a clipper so small would actually clip a horse. The Stable Pro proved everybody wrong and notched up a great deal of success especially amongst horse owners.

Naturally from a clipper so small in wattage size, and with a limited blade range there will be several breeds of horse it is going to refuse. Also when you attempt to clip a horse with a clipper of this type you need to re-think your approach to certainly "speed." With the Stable Pro - it does the clipping - you steer! Any attempt to push to hard and you may well get a "refusal"

Forgetting the attractiveness of the price against a normal horse clipper, and seen in it rightful slot in the "Clipper pecking order" as far as horse and large animals are concerned - a machine for a nervous nature, then it has credit to it name! The active noise level is excellent, and on many coats the 7200 plus cutting stroke certainly gets through the hair. Thicker coated breeds and dense socks and feather can be testing - some in fact impossible.

One major feature of this style of machine is the built in adjustment lever which enables the user to adjust the cutting depth with requiring a change of blades. Blade cutting depths can be altered to equal blade sizes #30, #15 and #10.

When fitting blades - either after cleaning or a new or re-sharpened set - attention is necessary in "aligning the blades before finally tightening the two blade screws. You also need to have the adjustment lever in the correct position. Failure to do either will almost certainly ensure the machine does not cut to it normal performance. Reference to the instruction leaflet is necessary.

On the down side - it has to be vibration! This is higher than on many machines, which were to follow and could be a problem with some - not all - horses. The on/off switch is rear mounted which means in an emergence you need two hands to switch off! Lastly blade choice is limited - in the case of wide blades - just the one.

In conclusion - this is a clipper which continues to surprise, if you have a nervous animal it could offer the opportunity to achieve a clip when other machines have failed.
