DO NOT!

  • Attempt to work on the machine with it connected to the main power supply.
  • Attempt to clip a wet or perspiring animal.
  • Touch the blades when moving!
  • Switch the machine on with loose or missing blades.
  • In the interests of safety ensure the both blades are tightly seated.
  • Over tighten the blades in an attempt to force them to clip.
  • Use if the voltage at your site is different to that on the clipper rating plate.
  • Attempt to disassemble the blades or any part of the clipper over straw, shavings or other material. Only carry out such tasks on a specified area i.e. table or work bench otherwise essential part may be lost.
  • Immerse either the machine or cutter head in liquid (oil/diesel/lubricant) of any kind.

Fitting the blades:

Ensure the machine is disconnected from the power supply

On the assumption that the machine has blades fitted at the time start at 1 if however blades are not fitted go to 2.

1.

Unscrew fully the Tension nut and remove together with the tension spring. Then push the protruding bolt head down through the aperture and withdraw through the comb. (See Clipper body diagram)

Rotate the machine 180 degrees and remove the comb blade by lifting it off the two blade lugs, next remove the cutter.

2.

The machine should be rotated 180 degrees so that it is upside down.

Before attaching the cutter blade apply a small amount of lubricant in the twin grooves along which the cutter moves.

Then fit the cutter so that the extended housing caps the crank roller (See fig 2) it should sit about half way up it.

Now take the comb and set it in place with the two comb peg pins positioned through the two holes in the rear of the blade (on a new machine this can be a little stiff in the beginning, but will ease with use.)

Insert the tension bolt through the hole in the centre of the comb making sure it is embedded right through, then with your thumb/finger holding it secure, rotate the machine 180 degrees back to its normal position - upright. Replace the tension spring followed by the tension bolt and proceed to screw the nut clockwise until it starts to feel tight.  (Proceed now to tension the blades as described below)

Tensioning the blades:

Having screwed down the tension nut until it is tight, according to the manufacturer's instruction if you now turn the tension nut anti-clockwise by one and a half turns you should have the tensioning at the correct setting.

If for some reason the machine fails to clip smoothly it is highly likely you have not correctly adjusted the tensioning. You should increase/decrease the tension nut - but no more than ¼ turns or less at a time to achieve optimum cutting. In most cases failure to clip correctly is operator orientated rather than a fault with the machine.

The tension nut top is marked with a line, which will assist in your noting the tension position for accuracy  (See Clipper body diagram)

IMPORTANT!

If the blades fail to cut avoid any attempt to increase the pressure on the blades as this will lead to excessive heat build up and will rapidly cause the blades to overheat and become blunt.

Keep your blades clean. The clipper will not cut if hair or dirt get between the blades.

Keep blades regularly well oiled at all times.

Remember blades can go blunt at a moment's notice due to high levels of dirt and grit with the animal's coat especially during the first clip of the season.

ALWAYS HAVE A SECOND OR SPARE SET OF BLADES AVAILABLE BEFORE YOU START CLIPPING!

In the case of even the best groomed horses unless they have previously wash there is likely to be considerable particles of grit which can cause blade failure. Be mindful that hair getting trapped between blades may interfere with the clipping performance.

Remember blades must be sharpened as matched sets.

Operating your Showman Clipper

Connect the clipper direct to the power pack unit which should be worn around your waist using the belt supplied. A full charge may be expected to last 2.5 hours although there are known case of longer times being recorded. If the pack is part charged the clipper will run for a proportion of the time the pack was on charge. Once you notice the power is staring to drain appreciably it is advisable to cease clipping and recharge the batteries.

Some of the cells within the battery drain before others with the result that the cells with the lowest charge will be reversed charged. This could be harmful to the unit!

Keep all plus and terminals clean and free from any moisture at all times.

Battery Unit

The Power pack contains nickel cadmium batteries and can be recharged many times. (We know one Scottish customer who expressed disappointment when he had to buy a new unit saying, "the wee battery was no more that twenty years old!" Batteries may be store when not in use in either a charged or discharged state without damage. Whilst there is no limit on the storage time of the unit, in the course of time the batteries will eventually lose all their charge through chemical self discharge. They can be returned to full service with a re-charge.

During storage both the clipper and the battery pack should be store in a dry place away from any potential damp or moisture variations, preferably in your house.

The Power pack is fitted with a resettable fuse, which will trip-out if an overload situation is reached. Should this occur it can be re-set after allowing a waiting period of a few minutes, by depressing the button on the top of the unit.

Alternative Lister battery packs have a replaceable 4-amp semi-delay fuse which must be replaced if blown.

NB. Overload situations can occur as a result of the lack of lubrication to the clipper blades or clipper head during the clipping operation. Also working the clipper to hard when the batteries have lost most of their charge can cause the same problem.

Re-Charging the Power Pack

Plug the charge into your mains power supply, and connect the lead to the power pack.

Energy stored in the batteries after charging is proportional to the time allow for charging.

Over charging will not damage the batteries.

The following is give as a guide to charging times:-

200/250V

  • 12-16 hours to attain full charge with a running time of 2.5 hours
  • 6-8 hours will give a running time of about 1.25 hours

12 VOLT Vehicle Batteries

If the battery remains in the vehicle there is no need to disconnect the battery terminals. Connect the clipper (1) direct to the battery extension lead (2). The red crocodile clip (3) is connected to the battery "positive" terminal (+) and the black crocodile clip to the "negative" (-) terminal (See Fig 3)

NOTE! If connected the wrong way round the motor rotation will be reversed thereby unscrewing the clipper head crank!

The motor could also be damaged!

When using the Showman clipper the discharge rate from the battery is equal to leaving a vehicle side lights on

Oiling:

Oiling of blades can be carried out when the machine is running.or stationary.

Oiling of the blades should be carried out at regular intervals during the clipping application.

Use only good quality light machine oil.

Routine Maintenance:

Cutter head

This should be cleaned after use. Remove the blades and clean, next using a soft brush then clean thoroughly both the head and all of the components parts within. Reassemble the machine carefully and oil any moving parts.

Storage:

When not in use, having been thoroughly cleaned and oiled, the machine should be stored in a dry place preferably in your house.  Do not leave in tack rooms or stables. The same should apply to all blades.

Additional Information:

By detaching the head of the Horse/Cattle machine you can fit a sheep shearing head

Should you attempt to remove the head of the appliance be extremely careful to replace it with the intermediate gearshaft assembly and gear shaft cog correctly aligned otherwise it is easy to strip the cogs resulting in expensive repairs! (See Clipper body diagram
