DO NOT!

  • Attempt to work on the machine with it connected to the main power supply.
  • Attempt to clip a wet or perspiring animal.
  • Touch the blades when moving!
  • Switch the machine on with loose or missing blades. (In the interests of safety ensure that both blades are tightly seated.)
  • Over tighten the blades in an attempt to force them to clip.
  • Use if the voltage at your site is different to that on the clipper rating plate.
  • Attempt to assemble or take apart the blades or any part of the clipper over straw, shavings or other materials. Only carry out such tasks on a specified area i.e. table or work bench otherwise essential parts may be lost.
  • Immerse either the machine or cutter head in liquid (oil/diesel/lubricant) of any kind.

Fitting the blades:

Ensure the machine is disconnect from the power supply

Unscrew to slacken first the tension screw. (See fig 1) This is important for tensioning blades later.

Turn the clipper 180 degrees so that the underneath is facing you. Make sure the blades are both clean (including between the teeth) and that there are no hairs on either blade faces. Insert the cutter with the crank head housing fitted over the crank head and the two blade heals set in the blade guide channel. (See fig 2 & 3) Make sure the channel is greased. Next place the comb over the top position the blade lugs into each of the two circular holes either side of the comb blade.

Now put the tension bolt through the “squared” hole in the centre of the comb blade and twist it to ensure it is inserted right into the squared recess. (See fig 3) With your finger holding the bolt in situ turn the clipper 180 degrees and fit the tension nut over the protruding bolt and screw down the tension nut until you feel resistance. Your blades should now be fitted correctly.

Tensioning the blades:

The manufacturer recommends screwing the tension nut down tight, and then turning the nut back 1½ turns, this being the correct setting. The marker on the top of the tension nut will act as a guide. Before you switch on the machine make sure you oil between the cutter points and along the front teeth. Wipe away any excess oil. Now run the machine briefly to test. Always point the machine away from yourself and/or your animal when making a test run.

In the event of over tightening you will hear a slight change in the motor pitch – a suggestion of labouring. . If for some reason the machine fails to clip smoothly it is highly likely you have not correctly adjusted the tensioning. You should increase/decrease the tension nut but no more than ¼ turns or less at a time to achieve optimum cutting. In most cases failure to clip correctly is operator orientated rather than a fault with the machine.

Do not over tighten the tension nut as this will eventually lead to excessive heat build up and will rapidly cause the blades overheat and become blunt. Keep blades well oiled at least every 10/15 minutes during the clipping operation. Remember blades can go blunt at a moment’s notice due to high levels of dirt and grit with the animal’s coat especially in the case of horses involving the first clip of the season. In the case of even the best groomed horses unless they have previously wash there is likely to be considerable particles of grit and dust which can cause rapid blade failure.

Reset Button:

The clipper is fitted with an overload protection switch, which will trip if the machine is overloaded. Should this occur thoroughly check the unit before attempting to fully depress the button to reset, which is located at the rear if the machine. If you are in any doubt as to the cause of “cutting out” the machine should be inspected by a qualified engineer.

Oiling:

WARNING! Oil should be either that as approved by the Manufacturer or a product of similar quality. DO NOT use products such as WD40, which will affect the cutting sharpness of your blades. Dipping the clipper head and/or blades in liquids such as diesel/paraffin/white spirit and other such products is strongly recommended AGAINST!

Oiling should be carried out at the point of assembly of the blades and frequently during the time the machine is running.

Use only light machine oil of good quality.

Routine Maintenance:

All maintenance should be carried out with the machine disconnected from the power supply

Gears

Every 100 running hours the clipper head should be removed, and cleaned removing any hair and old grease. Coat the gearwheel with fresh clean grease Lister R2 or Shell Alvania R2 or equivalent. Whilst the clipper head is removed check the gearwheel for any signs of wear or broken teeth.

Filters

The air filter located in the rear of the clipper casing requires to be regularly removed and thoroughly clean. Be sure to see that it is completely clean of all hair and dust, which rapidly build up and clog the fine protective gauzes. A high-pressure airline is the ideal method to clean otherwise wash in detergent solution and dry carefully. Keeping the filters clean is a vitally important maintenance task, which if not carried out can cause overheating of the motor with possible serious and costly damage. At the very minimum it is likely to result in inefficient clipping.

THE MOTOR SHOULD NOT BE RUN WITH THE FILTERS REMOVED

Storage:

When not in use, having been thoroughly cleaned and oiled, the machine should be stored in a dry place preferably in your house. Do not leave in tack rooms or stables The same should apply to all blades.
