Rotation rate:

2700 strokes per min.

DO NOT!

  • Attempt to work on the machine with it connected to the main power supply.
  • Attempt to clip a wet or perspiring animal.
  • Touch the blades when moving!
  • Switch the machine on with loose or missing blades. In the interests of safety ensure that both blades are tightly seated on the clipper head.
  • Over tighten the blades in an attempt to force them to clip.
  • Use if the voltage at your site is different to that on the clipper rating plate.
  • Attempt to take apart or assemble the blades or any part of the clipper over straw, shavings or other materials. Only carry out such tasks on a specified area i.e. table or work bench otherwise essential parts may be lost.
  • Immerse either the machine or cutter head in liquid (oil/diesel/lubricant) of any kind.

Fitting the blades:

Ensure the machine is disconnect from the power supply

Make sure both blades to be used are clean with no dirt or hair present on the cutting surfaces.

Make sure both blades to be used are clean with no dirt or hair present on the cutting surfaces.

Before fitting the blades (See Fig A for purposes of identification) loosen the tension nut - also sometimes called the "regulating nut" and remove any existing blades, which may be present. (It is important to loosen the tension nut otherwise it can affect the correct tensioning later and the resulting success of the clip.)

Continue to undo the tension nut, when free of the tension bolt remove for safe keeping along with the tension spring (See Clipper diagram)

Now turn the machine 180 degrees for a comfortable working position. Withdraw the bolt through the comb (larger of the two blades) and put with both the spring and nut for safekeeping. Next carefully remove the comb, then remove by lift of the drive crank the cutter (smaller of the two blades). Notice how the cutter is slotted into to "nib" situated on the head housing. (See Fig 1) Your blades are now both removed. Time to clean the clipper head!

To refit the blades reverse the procedure starting with the positioning of the smaller "cutter" blade seating it on the two "nibs" earlier referred to (See Fig 1). Next, replace the comb blade (larger of the two blades) and position over the two metal blade mountings (See Fig 1) comb lugs. Insert the tension bolt through the hole in the centre of the comb pushing it up through the cutter blade and the clipper head. Placing your thumb over the tension bolt to stop it falling out, now turn the machine 180 degrees and with the machine the right way up place the tension screw over the bolt and proceed to put the tension bolt in place and carefully screw back on. Do not tighten down finally until you are satisfied both blades are correctly positioned. Once satisfied the blades are correctly secured turn the tension nut a few times to take up the slack, but do not tighten.

Tensioning the blades:

To adjust the plate (blade) pressure (known as tensioning the blades) the machine should be running and pointed away from you and/or any animal for safety. Gradually slacken the tension nut (see Clipper diagram) until the upper cutter plate (cutter) is no longer exerting pressure on the lower cutter plate (comb) You will note a change of pitch in the sound of the motor. (Blade clatter) This indicates that the blades are too loose.

Now tighten the tension nut until you feel slight resistance, this will indicated the motor is starting to labour. Between the two points - “chattering blades” and the start of the “motor labouring” will be found the correct clipping tension. Usually as a guide one full 360-degree turn is sufficient, but this can depend on the age and life of the blades.

If for some reason the machine fails to clip smoothly it is highly likely you have not correctly adjusted the tensioning. Adjustment should be in small amounts. Increase/decrease the tension nut by no more than 1/4 turns (or less) at a time to achieve optimum cutting. In most cases failure to clip correctly is operator orientated rather than a fault with the machine. Practice is valuable!

You may need to adjust the tension during the clip - this has nothing to do with any fault on the part of the clipper, rather a change in texture of the coat being clipped. (Sheep folk do it all the time!)

Avoid setting the pressure on the cutter plate too high as this will lead to excessive heat build up and will rapidly cause the blades overheat and become blunt. Keep blades well oiled. Do please remember blades can go blunt at a moment’s notice due to high levels of dirt and grit within the animal’s coat especially in the case of horses during the first clip of the season. In the case of even the best groomed horses unless they have previously been washed there is likely to be a considerable build up of particles of grit and dust which can cause blade failure (on any type of blades!) very quickly.

Oiling:

Oiling of the blades should be carried out at regular intervals during the clipping application.

It is most important to ensure that the upper plate (cutter) is kept constantly oiled and not allowed to dry out as this will lead to overheating of the blades, which will quickly impair the cutting performance.

Use only light machine oil of good quality. Do not use sewing machine oil, bone or other oil. DO NOT use WD40 ever!

Routine Maintenance:

Servicing

Any attempted work inside the machine should only be carried out by a qualified engineer at an authorised dealership. Servicing should be carried a intervals according to use, but at least every two years more often if extensively used

Clipper head:

The clipper head can be removed by twisting the collar "anti-clockwise" and unscrewing. (See Fig 2) I prefer to hold the machine vertical when doing this operation. DO ensure that you conduct this operation over something soft - just in case you drop the head - definitely not recommended! With the head removed you can reach some of the inner parts which get surprisingly clogged with hair! Clean both inside the head and the body casing (a small water colour paint brush is very good for this job!)

NOTE OF CAUTION! When returning the clipper head to the body and preparing to screw the sleeve back make sure the head is correctly seated as you can cause damage to the gear and/or drive shaft if this is incorrectly undertaken. It is pretty fool proof so no body should have a problem!

Air Filters:

The air filter is located on the rear side of the clipper casing (opposite side to the on/off switch) and requires to be regularly removed and thoroughly clean. Be sure to see that it is completely clean of all hair and dust, which rapidly build up and clog the fine protective gauzes. A high-pressure airline is the ideal method to clean otherwise wash in detergent solution and dry carefully. Keeping the filter clean is a vitally important maintenance task, which if not carried out can cause overheating of the motor with possible serious and costly damage. At the very minimum it is likely to result in inefficient clipping.

Cable lead

should be check regularly for cuts or other signs of damage (Hooves with shoes can inflict cable damage.)

Cutter head

should be cleaned regularly. Remove both blades. Using a soft brush clean thoroughly both the head and all component parts. After which wipe clean with a dry cloth. Reassemble the machine carefully and oil the cutter head.

Storage:

When not in use, having been thoroughly cleaned and oiled, the machine should be stored in a dry place preferably in your house. Do not leave in tack rooms, stables, cow barn, dairy shed, lorries, or outside! The same should apply to all blades.
