DO NOT!

  • Attempt to work on the machine with it connected to the main power supply.
  • Attempt to clip a wet or perspiring animal.
  • Touch the blades when moving!
  •  Switch the machine on with loose or missing blades.
  • (In the interests of safety ensure that both blades are tightly seated.)
  • Over tighten the blades in an attempt to force them to clip.
  • Use if the voltage at your site is different to that on the clipper rating plate.
  • Attempt to take apart the blades or any part of the clipper over straw, shavings or other materials. Only carry out such tasks on a specified area i.e. table or workbench otherwise essential parts may be lost.
  • Immerse either the machine or cutter head in liquid (oil/diesel/lubricant) of any kind.

Fitting the blades:

Ensure the machine is disconnected from the power supply

Unscrew to slacken first the knurled nut and then the tension nut (See clipper diagram)

This is important otherwise it may affect the tensioning of the blades later

Rotate the machine 180 degrees until it is upside down. Loosen both blade-clamping screws with a broad-based screwdriver to avoid damaging the screw heads. Locate and make sure the drive block is correctly engaged in the square groove of the oscillator (See Fig 2)

TIP! When the head is not equipped with fitted blades it protect against possible loss of the drive block (essential bit of kit!)  if you put a rubber band around the head. This will stop the drive carriage dropping down, and so exposing the drive block, which can easily fall out.

Next take the upper cutting plate (cutter) and set into the two "nib" pins provided on the drive carriage, checking that it is secure. (See Fig 2)

Then take the lower blade plate (comb) sliding it beneath the heads of the two clamping screws previously slackened and slide it right back until it touches the rear housing. With older blades make sure the blades have at least 1/16th of an inch gap between the teeth tips.

Now tighten the two clamping screws securely to lock the lower cutter plate (comb) in position.

Slightly tighten the tension nut to take up any slack before adjusting the blades otherwise the cutter can jam. Rotate the machine back into the normal position.

Tensioning the blades:

To adjust the plate pressure (tension the blades) the machine should be running and pointed away from you and/or any animal. Slacken the knurled nut (See clipper diagram) and adjust the tension nut until the upper cutter plate (cutter) is no longer exerting pressure on the lower cutter plate (comb) You will note a higher pitch in the sound of the motor.

Now tighten the tension nut until you feel slight resistance, and apply roughly a further ¼ turn. Lock the position with knurled nut and test for cutting. In the event of over tightening you will hear the motor pitch labouring.

If for some reason the machine fails to clip smoothly it is highly likely you have not correctly adjusted the tensioning. You should increase/decrease the tension nut by no more than ¼ turns or less at a time to achieve optimum cutting.  Do this in either direction to explore the correct position. In almost all cases failure to clip correctly is operator orientated rather than a fault with the machine. (The possible alternative being blunt blades!)

Avoid setting the pressure on the cutter plate too high as this will lead to excessive heat build up and will rapidly cause the blades to overheat and become blunt.  Keep blades well oiled. Remember any set of blades can go blunt at a moment’s notice due to high levels of dirt and grit within the animal’s coat especially with horses during the first clip of the season.  In the case of even the best groomed horses unless they have been previously washed there is likely to be considerable particles of grit and adlib dust which can and will cause blade failure.

Oiling:

Oiling should only be carried out when the machine is running.

Oiling of the blades should be carried out at regular intervals during the clipping application.

Use only light machine oil of a good quality.

Routine Maintenance:

Air Filter

The Filter is the “air intake” of the clipper and is the means by which it is cooled during operational activities. All filters require regular cleaning in order for the machine to function correctly. During the removal of the air filter-casing precautions should be taken to ensure no foreign matter gets into the machine. Filters can be effectively cleaned by using a stiff tooth brush or a semi stiff wire suede shoe clean brush. They should be cleaned on both sides.  In certain cases were the filters have become greasy they can be washed in mild detergent and replaced only after being thoroughly dried.

Do NOT operate the machine without the filter in place.

Gear wheel

Use Aesculap gear grease

Remove cutter head and apply approx. 1 cm of grease to the opposing points on the Gear wheel.

Graphite brushes

The motor is equipped with graphite brushes, Check regularly to monitor for wear.  Always have a spare set to hand to replace worn brushes.

Cutter head

Should be cleaned after regular periods of use. Remove the head from the motor housing Using a soft brush clean thoroughly both the head and all components parts. Reassemble the machine carefully and oil the cutter head. After each and every operation remove both blades and clean the thoroughly both the head and all components parts. If available an airline is ideal for this purpose.

Storage:

When not in use, having been thoroughly cleaned and oiled, the machine should be stored in a dry place preferably in your house.  Do not leave in tack rooms, stables, dairies or barns. The same should apply to all your blades.
