RABBITS For many breeds of rabbits clipping may only be for husbandry or hygienic reason, and as such may be only partial, rather than "full body." However the priority is still likely to be the need for a really quite machine, one that will clip effectively and relatively quickly. For work of a "full-body" nature the most suited clippers are to be found within the dog clipper sectors with machines made by manufacturers such as Andis, Oster, Laube, and Moser. The cheaper "Pet trimmer" brands have considerable limitations, both in power and blade selection. Single speed mains powered machines with 20/30 wattage motors will give a good cutting power. Ideally such clippers should take the A5 "detachable" snap-on type blade of which there is a good selection from several manufacturers. (See fig 1)
Several models worth considering are: - Andis MBG - 20 watts Andis AGC - 35 watts Oster A5 - 35 watts Laube Mini Micro Moser Max 45 - 45 watts Details of all these clippers can be viewed on our website under "CLIPPERS" - scroll down to "Mains powered dog clippers. (You can view the Peasridge Web Site by clicking on "Peasridge Web Site" at the top of this page.) Toe blades - which have a narrow cutting face (See fig 2) can be useful for tackling some of the more delicate or difficult parts of the rabbit's body. These are some of the narrowest blades available. Normal dog blades are of an average 45mm cutting face size whereas a Toe blade measures about 5/8th inch.
Several of the small trimmers (See fig 3) available can provide a useful role especially if the task is more one of tidying up or clipping out rear ends. Their limitations are two fold - power and blade selection. They do however have fairly narrow faced blades.
ANGORA RABBITS For this breed one particular clipper is widely used by Angora goat owners both in the UK and in Europe - no doubt influenced by the fact that the manufacturer has developed a blade especially for the Angora rabbit. (See fig 4)
Known as the Aesculap Favorita II it is a German made product engineered to perfection, which is why it has the reputation for reliability especially as a professional dog parlour clipper. The innovative design and attractive style of the slim shaped handpiece, incorporates a combination of balance and lightness, to ensure the operator precision clipping to the highest standards. A number of features lift this machine into a superior category, including the ball bearing universal motor, which provides great durability and long life, with almost total vibration free running. The Aesculap Favorita II is an excellent choice for clipping Angora Goats and Rabbits. The GT746 blade is recommended for use on both goats and rabbits .There is a wide selection of other blades some of which may well be suitable to the Angoras requirements. Any of the other five clippers as shown in fig 5 will and can be used to clip the Angora rabbit, but you will need to experiment with the various blades available, as unlike the Aesculap GT746 blade they are not essentially designed clipping Angora Rabbits. Regular oiling is an important feature with any make or model of clipping machine. One needs to be mindful that two metal objects are tightly clamped together and usually passing across the surface of each other at speeds well in excess of several thousand strokes per minute. Lubrication is there essential and at regular intervals. Make sure you are using the correct type of oil (see your handbook,) that you have plenty of oil available, and that you direct a few drips on the blades and in various oiling points frequently!
