Angora breeds

Clippers for Angora rabbits

Clippers for Angora rabbits

These comments are about clipping for husbandry reasons and NOT to show standards : When talking about "show clipping" this is a totally different concept and one where the requirements will vary from breed to breed

Clipping rabbits falls in to two main categories - harvesting the coat fibres as in the case of the Angora breed or the clipping of various breeds of domestic rabbits - large or small - for either show or husbandry purposes (Mainly sanitary and hygiene reasons.)

Generally speaking rabbits that have been clipped a number of times are not normally a problem. However like cats many rabbits may view being clipped with less than a degree of enthusiasm! Generally the way your rabbit behaves when being clipped will largely depend on how you will have "trained" it to being clipped as well as other husbandry tasks such as nail clipping. The more done at a very early age the better it will be both from the rabbit's aspect as well as from yours!

With any animal - large or small the first approach to being clipped is one that needs a degree of pre thought - one error in your judgement or approach can mean a long time before you again regain the animal's confidence! (During which clipping will be a nightmare for both you and the rabbit!) Always reward with food after! The careful selection of both clipper and blade should be upper most in your mind. Both can make a big difference to the reaction of your rabbit!

With either a new clipper or a rabbit being clipped for the first time, introduce the clipper in short and gentle stages. Long before you attempt to switch the motor on, allow the rabbit to sniff and explore the machine. Remember to your rabbit this is a strange if not fearful object! Take your time - Do not be in a hurry! Only when the rabbit appears to have accepted the clipper, make any attempt to run the motor. Do this from a distance first, then gradually in a place the rabbit associates with the security of its home. Run the motor for brief intervals. With acceptance, move closer to the rabbit each time.

When the rabbit appears to have accepted the motor tone of the clipper, then and only then - bring the clipper to the animal's body (Far away from the head or any known sensitive areas!) At this point do not switch on the motor - let the rabbit become comfortable with the feel of the machine against the body! Once you judge the rabbit has accepted the feel of the clipper then and only then, run the motor for a few seconds. Judge the reaction before proceeding further. Do this in short spells two or three times a day depending on reaction. Time consuming agreed, but worth it in the long run!

With any clipper, the two foremost requirements should be a machine with the lowest noise/motor tone level when running, and one that has no vibration. Noise and vibration are the two factors that scare an animal more than anything! This is something that affects all species of animals both large and small - not just rabbits! These comments apply to Angora rabbits as well as domestic breeds clipped for husbandry or sanitary purposes.

With such a vast range of clippers and trimmers on the market regrettably a lot of rabbit owners get easily trapped into purchasing the wrong type of clipping machine for a variety of reasons.

Your choice of clipper should be based on two main reasons -

First - It clips in a manner that is as "pleasant" as you can possibly make it for the rabbit. Rabbits like cats in the main are nervous of the unknown and being clipped is not on their list of enjoyable pastimes as shown in the often violent reaction! Machine "noise or tone" and "blade vibration" are the two features likely to make the task of clipping difficult!

Secondly - blade selection Selection of the right blade is important so that the fur is cut cleanly and not "pulled" especially if you are involved with matts" Understanding and selecting the most suitable blade will make not only your task easier to achieve, but easier on your rabbit. In any form of clipping it is the blade that plays the important role of "cutting." The clipper is the instrument of power, tone and vibration!

The selection of either corded (main powered with cable) or cordless (battery driven) is matter of personal choice!

Points to consider are -
"Corded" machines are generally less expensive but have the disadvantage of both trailing and cable restriction.

"Cordless" are more expensive! In recent years battery technology has made huge advancments. Batteries today are light, small, with good clip times and a fast re-charge times! Quality clippers are often supplied with two battery packs allowing continous clipping.

NOISE LEVEL SCORES
Assessing the noise level and creating a "score" for any clipper or trimmer is intended for general guidance purposes only.

A number of varying factors may exist - such as whether you are clipping inside a building, or outside in the open, can have a bearing on the noise level perceived by the animal. The introduction of any clipper should be done sympathetically and on a gradual basis if you have reason to believe your animal is either new to or nervous about being clipped. Noise Level Scores can be seen on each machine specification and are calculated as follows ....

The Noise Level Score 1
Clippers rated with this score are considered to be "almost silent" Currently only one has ever qualified - the Aesculap "Exacta" trimmer!

The Noise Level Score 2
Clippers rated with this score are considered to be of low sound or tone level. Those with a + added should be consider as marginally louder. Such machine would be considered suitable for all nervous temprements. Aesculap clippers which have an exceptionally low tone are frequently listed in this category.
Vibration factors tend to range from "minimal to eradicated" in this catagory.

The Noise Level Score 3
Clippers rated with this score are considered to be of a lower or average sound/ tone level. Those with a + added should be consider as marginally louder in tone.

The Noise Level Score 4
Clippers rated with this score are considered to be of a noisy sound or tone level. Those with a + added should be consider marginally louder in tone. Such machines are not considered suitable for any nervous temprements. Vibration levels may be high.

The Noise Level Score 5
Clippers rated with this score are considered to be noisy. Those with a + should be consider marginally louder. Such machines are not considered suitable for any nervous or new to clipping animal. Vibration levels may be high.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
If you want a small but powerful professional clipper that is both comfortable and light to hold, as well as relatively quiet with a unique smooth tone to use on your Angora rabbits, - a clipper popular with Angora rabbit owners and which is designed to give years of service, then the German made Aesculap Favorita II is probably one of the best!

Made by Aesculap who are part of the of the German company - B Braun GmbH - a multinational company, internationally famous for decades, for its pioneering and leading involvement in both veterinary and human medical equipment. Today recognised as specialists in their field, the design, engineering and finished quality of all their products is typically German and virtually unbeatable!

All Aesculap clippers have a history of being manufactured to a standard where quality, reliability and long levity are the key concerns. The Favorita II is no exception - superb engineering that results in a motor tone which is unique and is a hall mark of all Aesculap clipping products. One impressive factor which features this is the lack of nervousness exhibited by animals when clipped with this machine. For all animals/pets whatever their size, the lack of vibration and high noise levels generally reduces their stress factor when being clipped.

Designed over three decades ago, it has been sold in large numbers all over the world, and today both the mains and cordless versions are still highly sought after. The innovative design and attractive style of the slim shaped handpiece, incorporates a combination of balance and lightness, to ensure the operator precision clipping to the highest standards. We particularly favour the side positioned "on-off" switch designed and positioned for easy and safe operation especially in an emergency situation.

A number of features place this machine into a superior category, including the ball bearing universal motor, which provides great durability and long life, with almost total vibration free running. The ventilation system eliminates aspects of overheating, ensuring suitability for prolonged use. The air filter can be easily cleaned and the motor and all internal parts are encased in an unbreakable body casing.

Whilst originally designed for the professional dog groomer, the Favorita II has proved an excellent choice beyond the realms of dog clipping and become popular with owners clipping Angora rabbits. In fact all over Europe it is one of the recognised clippers for Angora rabbits. The GT746 blade is especially made by Aesculap for Angora rabbits. Other blades offer a good selection for the various types of clipping.

PLEASE NOTE!
Only AESCULAP “Favorita “blades can be fitted to this clipper.

PROS: Impressive traditional German quality derived from outstanding design and engineering skills. Intended to last and give years of reliability. Impeccable trial results in very day situations with normal working procedures.

CONS: Restricted to use of Favourita blades only. Positioning of on/off switch for emergency use

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION Essentially a cordless version of the Favorita II with two batteries, more compact and a shaped handpiece which adds to comfort when clipping. Engineering is typically German! For those fans and users of the mains powered Favourita II - now you have the opportunity to go "cordless!" :

Peasridge can speak with some authority on the Aesculap Favorita II CL, having been involved in the early test mode stages and later with pre-production models. Our testing sources were not always professionals in clipper use or maintenance, but a mixture of professional groomers and busy veterinary practices and pet owners all of which first and foremost seek reliability as well as performance in their working tools!

The "CL" is compact, lightweight and perfectly balanced! In the past cordless clipper where noted for their rather "in-balanced" feel due to heavy battery packs which fitted into the rear. These machines became very weary on the hand and arm to operate for any length of time! The modern battery packs (of which the machine is supplied with two) are incredibly light and compact (10 grams each.) They slot with ease into the rear body housing and the clipper may be charged with the battery fitted or divorced from the body. Using Li-ion batteries the DC voltage rating is 7.4v with a charge capacity of approx.: 1.2Ah. The charge time is stated as 50 minutes + 5. Clip time 60 minutes.

The Charger unit is attractively designed, lightweight (0.45kgs) yet of decent size, robust and with two charging ports, one will hold the battery whilst still engaged in the machine - the other is for a detached battery pack. The charger is fitted with small "pads" for anti-slip on any smooth surface. The cord and moulded plug slots into the rear of the charger. Lead and plug - UK 3-pin fitted with 3amp fuse - is roughly 2m/79-inches in length

The body casing is in traditional Favourita "red" and is shaped to give a nice hand grip. The noise level is low - it has that tone that is unmistakably an Aesculap machine! The motor tone is mechanically smooth running with an absence of any vibration, and as a result has become popular with those involved in clipping animals with a nervous temperament. Aesculap engineers have pioneered low cutting strokes without any loss of power thus ensuring that as a cordless clipper it is one of the most powerful available!

Blades are traditionally cool running with correct oiling, and in keeping with most machines the drive lever mechanism need checking and possibly replacing annually dependant on frequency of use in order to maintain peak performance! The Aesculap Favorita blades have a built in tensioning device designed to enable you to tighten in cases when the blade starts to "dull" (go blunt) so as to complete the job! This is the only time you need to adjust it!

The clipper is sold with an attractive newly designed hard plastic carry case of solid construction and designed to last and protect your clipper in transit or storage.

Current case dimensions (when closed) are:
Width: 14-inches/35.5cm Height: 12-inches/30.5cm Depth: 4 and 3/8th- inches/11cm

PLEASE NOTE!
Only AESCULAP “Favorita “blades can be fitted to this clipper.

CONS: Expensive? Un-ashamedly Yes! That however is the price of quality engineering!

PRODUCT INFORMATION
The appeal of Aesculap clippers (and this applies to all their machines whether for large or small animals) is above all the many qualities of this make, the quietness of the machine when in operation! For any breeder or pet owner of Angora rabbits the Aesculaps’s unique low tone and natural smoothness of the motor coupled with the lack of blade vibration makes it the natural choice

With over two decades of manufacturing the Favorita II - probably the best cat and dog clipper made - Aesculap suddenly stormed the grooming world in 2010 lifting manufacturing standards to a new level with the introduction of their FAV5 GT105- their first ever detachable A5 type blade using clipper!.

The FAV5 is a powerful machine with a smooth sounding motor which apart from being typically Aesculap in tone inspires confidence in its ability to generate power for professional use. Now with that power and the expertise of Aesculap engineering you can also fit not only your existing detachable A5 blades - whether they be Oster, Andis, Laube, Thrive or Wahl. Aesculap have also created a full range of Aesculap high quality German made detachable type A5 blades which closely “mirror” the sizes of your existing Oster blades.

Peasridge was one of the few privileged to conduct intensive practical field trials in a number of professional grooming parlours and can say with complete confidence that the FAV5 fully lived up to the very high standards of performance we have come to expect from Aesculap over many years. Since then it has gone on to prove itself in many areas apart from cat and dog grooming.

A number of engineering features lifts this machine into a superior category and as such places it ahead of any competitors.
A ball bearing universal motor providing great durability
A smooth low noise level motor tone - the hallmark of Aesculap quality!
A cutting stroke ratio generating virtually a total absence of vibration.
A ventilation system eliminating overheating during prolonged use.

PROS: Impressive professional clipper! Combining German manufacturing quality with outstanding design it is Intended to give years of reliability service. The cordless machine like the mains and Hybrid models has proved its ability in many grooming field throughout the world and has shown itself to be outstanding with nervous animals!
CONS: From a practical aspect we do not approve of rear end on/off switch in an emergency situation,

PRODUCT INFORMATION
The cordless Aesculap FAV5 is admittedly and expensive purchase, but when compared to other cordless machines which may have the appeal of a more attractive price one should perhaps ask “why?” The answer is not apparent until you open the body casing and start to appreciate the quality of both design and engineering. Then suddenly one appreciates “why!” One example is the “PCB” electronics are a far higher spec than those found in other machines which contributes to the power and noise levels generated.

Important to all small animal owners but especially angora rabbit owners is the question of both noise and vibration!. Rabbits like catsats do not always have love of being clipped and can quickly become terrified if confronted with something noisy. Aesculap clippers have always been noted for motors that emitted smoother and lower tones than many other similar machines which makes them highly suited to all animals of a nervous temperament. The cordless FAV5 not only inherits the quieter motor tone but enjoys the added feature of blade vibration eradicated – a feature of many Aesculap model both large and small.

The lower cutting strokes of 2300/min are achieved without any noticeable loss of power compared to the mains models thank to the higher spec electronic and many of the internal components are identical to the two other FAV5 model. Both the cordless and the “Hybrid” have the same slim shaped handpiece. And the shorter compact length, whilst retaining the same generous sized blade release button and clever bit of typically German design and engineering that holds the blade release clip open whilst you refit the blade!

Whether you are an individual angora rabbit owner or breeder clipping whether to harvest the valuable fibre or for routine husbandry or sanitary purposes, the Aesculap range and the clippers ability to use other makes of detachable A5 type blades offer you a huge choice to select from.

PROS: Highly impressive clipper of exceptional quality combined with outstanding design and engineering skills. Both the previous FAV5's models (mains and cordless) proved themselves in many clipping fields! The "Hybrid" makes this top quality clipper more a affordable purchase!
CONS: We question rear end positioning of the on/off switch in an emergency situation

PRODUCT INFORMATION
The "Hybrid" is basically an Aesculap FAV5 mains clipper with the ability to be transformed into a cordless machine. To do this you would have to purchase battery packs and the charger unit. The cord pack is removed and replace with a battery inserted in the rear of the handpiece in the same way as you insert or remove the cord pack. This then allows the option of use in either mode. Purchase of a second battery would offer continuous clipping.

For the customer seeking traditional German high quality in both design and engineering the "Hybrid" offers the opportunity to acquire one of the most outstanding professional clippers seen on the market in recent years. It can be used with all your existing A5 detachable blades irrespective of the make, and is marketed at a more affordable price than either the Fav5 CL GT306 cordless or Fav5 GT105 mains corded machines.

Of special value to all small animal owners but especially rabbit owners is the smooth and unmistakable "Aesculap" motor tone! Rabbits like cats do not have an appreciation of being clipped. Aesculap clippers have always been noted for motors that emitted smoother and lower tones than many other similar machines which makes them highly suited to all animals of a nervous temperament. The "Hybrid" not only inherits the quieter motor tone but enjoys the added feature of blade vibration eradicated – a feature of many Aesculap model both large and small.

The "Hybrid" GT308 in the “corded” mode has a slightly higher cutting stroke frequency 2500/min. However when converted to the battery mode, the cutting stroke rate is marginally reduced to 2300/min without any noticeable loss of power. Otherwise apart from the mode of operation it is virtually identical to the cordless model having the same slim shaped handpiece, and compact length. Like both the mains and cordless Fav5's it has the same generous sized blade release button, not the “mean” type supplied by many manufacturers. A clever bit of typically German design and engineering holds the blade release clip open whilst you refit the blade!

Whether you are an individual angora rabbit owner or breeder clipping to harvest the valuable fibre or for routine husbandry or sanitary purposes, the Aesculap range and the clippers ability to use other makes of detachable A5 type blades offer you a huge choice to select from whatever the task confronting you maybe.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
The Heiniger “Smart” is identical to the earlier model the “Saphir” the only difference being it is supplied with a #10 blade and a more colourful upper body casing which is perceived as more fashionable than the blue/black of the earlier model.

The "Saphir" when first launched in the early 2000’s quickly established Heiniger as a first choice amongst many veterinary practitioners in the UK, and internationally. Within a short space of time many professional dog groomers and domestic pet owners followed prefering the advantages of cordless mode with the new battery technology, compared to traditional mains machines, and especially a cordless one that would accept their A5 type detachable blades.

Two features of the "Smart” like the “Saphir” – the low noise level plus relative none existence of vibration will be especially appealing to the cat owner. The "Smart” is delightfully lightweight - a mere 0.44kg - even with battery attached, nice and compact - under 205mm/8-inches (including a narrow blade attached) comfortable to hold, well balanced and easy to operate whether in a male or female hand. The clipper body casing design is moulded to give a slimmer and improved grip just were you hold it! The powerful 35 watt motor has soft motor note that is instantly associated with high quality engineering of the Germanic type. Free of vibration its single speed motor provides a powerful 2650 double cutting strokes per minute.

One critical observation - the rear mounted switch is not in our favourite position for an emergency stop situation! From a practical position we prefer the on/off switch to instantly accessible.

The "Smart” is powered by a lightweight Lithium-ion batteries - it is supplied with two for continuous clipping. Each battery has a clip time of 50 minutes with a fast re-charge time of 45 minutes Lithium-ion batteries (sometimes abbreviated Li-ion batteries) offer many advantages over earlier batteries. A light and compact charger unit provides two charging bays. If the clipper with battery is placed in the charging bay, (Bay with raised back surround.) the charger will charge the clipper. The spare battery in its charging bay however will not be charged. Remove the clipper from its charging bay, the charger will then charge the spare battery. A red led light indicating charging is in progress, a green led light indicating charging has completed. In the rear of the charger casing slots enable it to be wall mounted if required

Most standard type attachment comb can be fitted to blades from blades size #50 to size #8.5. Blades of all makes below this size do not fit attachment combs, due to the increasing thickness (size) of the bottom plate (comb blade). Combs will not fit the "detachable" wide blades. The purpose of using an attachment combs is to leave a greater length of un-cut hair than the blade selected would normally leave. They are used mainly by dog groomers and pet owners. It is important to remember however that if you use an attachment comb you must be very thorough in the grooming the coat before clipping. There MUST NOT be any tangles or knots - otherwise the comb may come off the blade, refuse to pass through the hair, and the clipping process may be painful to the animal!.

On the subject of blades, Heiniger do not make A5 type detachable blades and whilst not confirmed we suspect due to the close collaboration between Heiniger and Aesculap they are in fact Aesculap made blades. Certainly apart from the name “Heiniger” over stamped on the blade, the appearance is identical.
