+ Attractive value for money trimmer. Lots of extras included. Good for "cleaning up" the family hound..

- We feel the description "clipper" is a bit misleading with this quality of machine. People immediately view it as a clipper rather than an economy trimmer, and think it is able to cope with "more serious" clipping. Whilst being versatile it does have limitations! Flimsy attachment combs. On/off switch not well located.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
A smart pet trimmer kit described as a "Home Grooming Animal Kit." The clipper has a strong resemblance to a Wahl human low price economy hair clipper, and in our opinion those with a dog breed, which requires and degree of semi serious clipping should resist the temptation to purchase without looking at some of the more up market and capable machines.

Experience proves time and time again that these economy priced clippers (we prefer the term -"trimmers") do not live up to customer expectations and lead to considerable disappointment. If you have a Spaniel, Poodle or Terrier, forget this product and purchase one of the "detachable" blade machines. (Look at Andis MBG or Andis AGC-single speed clippers)

Attractively cheap and packaged with a lot of bits including four rather flimsy attachment (blending) combs, a smart comb and sharp pair of scissors (for use when the blades go blunt?) plus "instructional" DVD, oil and cleaning brush. The DVD is a useful instructional medium and considering the audience to which it is address i.e. pet owners - it has some good information and advice - even if one questions the merits of washing your mutt in the kitchen sink!

The electro magnetic has a rather loud "hum, and when first switched on starts off with aloud "clonk" suggesting that the whole thing is about to blow up! Don't worry its quite normal! A side fitted adjustable lever allows for adjustment to blade cutting depths. Blades do need to be correctly fitted and also aligned properly - otherwise you have cutting problems!

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
Described as a "Professional Clipper" we would prefer to think of it as a useful, very adaptable and highly competent "trimmer" rather than the "Clipper" description as given on the box. The use of the word "clipper" might convey to some consumers the impression that this machine could have a far greater capability than might be the case, and as a result there may be the temptation to both purchase and use it in a number of clipping modes where it is possibility unsuited.

However that said - and seen as a "trimmer," our practical tests suggest if correctly used and fitted with right blade, it can be highly successfully in a wide range of light duty task on many species. A trimmer with a variable speed facility offers a greater flexibility than you have with any one-speed machine. Added to which the ability to upgrade to cordless mode With the purchase of the battery unit greatly adds to the attraction of this machine (See CLIPPER ACCESSORIES - Clipper battery units:)

In the mains mode we would envisage this product being used for a wide range of "light duty" trimming tasks rather than any serious clipping operations for which one would use a tradition clipper. Such tasks would include say specific trimming of exhibition cattle (after use of a traditional clipper.) Use on horses heads for facial tasks. The may well be a number of occasions if fitted with the correct blade the trimmer could be used for horse legs and light hogging purposes, depending on the density of the hair texture.

For many domestic pet owners - cat, dog, and rabbits - the "Liveryman Stepless Speed" could have a positive justification depending on the work to be undertaken, although in this section of the market there is now an increasing choice, which in turn increases the necessity for careful selection of the right machine for your purposes! In such instances - and depending on the species involved, the selection of available blades and motor tone will possibly be the compelling features influencing your final choice.
Certainly the price of the "Stepless" in mains mode, with the added ability to convert to "cordless mode (admittedly at extra cost) will be a major attraction!

Those who contemplate converting to the cordless mode will find the battery is highly effective and as such open the trimmer to new horizons. Although not in a true sense "cordless" this type of battery with lead attachment is used effetely with other makes. The retractable lead will stretch to a maximum of 1m. The battery has provision to "hook" onto your belt and is light (0.50kgs) and compact. Certainly with a cord pack this trimmer can be used by those contemplating clipping their own horse or domestic pets for the first time has much merit.

Switching to cordless mode is a simple and quick operation - twist and dis-connect the lead of the main power adapter at the rear of the trimmer, and then insert and twist lock the plug on the battery lead. The battery can be purchased complete with retractable lead and insert to trimmer plug. Surprisingly when in cordless mode the variable tone is different to that of mains mode and as such lower without evidence of any increase when you up the speed!

The motor noise level emitted when switched on is very low and therefore acceptable to most animals; however as would be reasonable to expect with the increasing of the motor speed, there is a slight change in the motor tone - the pitch increases, the sound marginally more noticeable. This is not great but is evident to the human ear. We also suspect a degree of minor vibration might be felt by the more nervous animal. Whilst not envisaged as a major problem, it is nevertheless worth being mindful of if you are intending use on a really nervous animal, such as a cat or horse.

Normally machines manufactured in the Far East set off a number of "alarm bells" concerning quality, reliability, and in some cases - availability of spare parts. Well it would appear Liveryman has done their research well and all three get the "tick" of approval. Certainly to date we are not aware of adverse criticisms of any of the above.

The blades are of the "detachable" all one piece type. (NOT intended to be taken apart!) They "snap" back on the clipper head with a "V" shaped metal "hook" which should be positioned into an opening the plastic head housing. (Worth familiarising oneself before attempting to replace a blade!) As with the "detachable" type blade there is therefore no tensioning involved. Blades should be removed by "easing" off the clipper head with your fingers. (Pulling gently back from the clipper head) This is different to the traditional A5 type "detachable" blade where there is a hinge assembly, and the blade sits on a protruding "tongue". Such blades are normally released by the pressing of a "release" button/lever immediately below the blade. Due to the style of the drive lever the "Stepless "blades can normally be put on with the motor in the off position. Blades can be re-sharpened many times.

The instruction manual, (leaflet) is worthy of fully reading before you start any actual clipping! It contains valuable information regarding attaching blades, operating instructions including oiling blades when in use - regular applications of oil are important to keep the blades cool. The motor is said to require no maintenance with a service life of approximately 1000 hours of correct use. Adverse effects to the unit are basically "common sense" but ALL manuals are worth reading .............BEFORE you start to use the machine!

Oiling every few minutes is important - it is the only form of lubrication blades get and prevents then overheating when in use. Oiling blades should therefore become a discipline one adheres to - as is the case with most clippers. On the subject of oiling - you will be wise to purchase additional oil as the amount supplied is a fraction of what you will need and use!

In conclusion - seen as well as used in the correct manner - the Liveryman "Stepless Speed" is remarkable good value and will not doubt prove highly suitable both for a number of horse owners as well as many with a domestic pet, whether cats, dogs or rabbits, and for which there is a need to resort to the use of a trimmer from time to time for husbandry purposes. In the cordless mode its value is greatly enhanced.
