White enhauncing products
Amongst the natural based shampoos there are some, which are suitable for extra whitening and brightening of a white coat, or the enhancement of black wool. Several have the added ability to remove various types of stains, without containing bleaches and similar additives.
One important point to consider - especially with show sheep - is that if you intend to wash your sheep do allow sufficient time before the intended showing date so as to give the natural oils within the fleece time to recover from washing. (This can be as much as six weeks with certain breeds.)
Washing in even plain water can deplete the natural oils and in those breeds where a lustrous fleece is considered important the feel of dry wool can be costly when being judged!
Keeping show stock clean after washing is essential! This means special attention to the weather, possible nightly housing, making sure of plenty of fresh clean bedding, protection against aluminium rub marks in trailers when transporting and finally watch out for those show pens that have been freshly painted!
Recommended shampoos are: -
DOUBLE "K" - Alpha White
DOUBLE "K" - Midnight White
Some stains can be removed with selected shampoos such as
DOUBLE "K" - Grimeinator
Another good stain remover is the American product Sullivan's EZ CLEAN. This is a waterless stain remover supplied in a trigger spray bottle, which can be sprayed onto the affected coat area and towelled off until dry.
However it should be noted that urine stains - especially on certain female sheep breeds, are some of the hardest to combat. Often there is little one can do especially if the staining has been allowed to go on for a degree of time. In effect it kills the staple leaving it a dull lifeless colour in the remaining hair strands that haven't rotted away.
Many sheep legs and faces in particular can all benefit from being washed in certain whitening shampoos such as "Alpha White and Midnight White."
Up until the later part of 2013 "Ultra White Chalk." was available, and had a unique "staying" power which did not rub off like many chalks. Unfortunately production ceased. An alternative that might be considered is "Whiter than White ." Show paste.
The various products referred to in the above article are available on this website for sale and may be found under the following product headings -
