OSTER "
narrow "detachable" A 5 type blades are suitable for use on all professional clippers using "detachable" blades such as those manufactured by Andis, Laube, Moser, Thrive, and Wahl.
Along with Oster clippers, Oster blades have for many years been the main stay and popular choice of the animal grooming world, and as such were used for principally clipping dogs, and cats as well as many other animals both large and small.
Always a popular and frequently used blade in the veterinary world, the Oster size #40 blade was often referred to as the "surgical blade."
Today with a market offering a wider selection of blade from 5 or 6 leading and much respected manufacturers, the Oster blade is still the choice of many.
Customer should note:
Narrow detachable small animal blades:
The blades clipping to the closest distance from the skin - thus leaving the least hair will be the highest blade number (#40)
Blades leaving increasing depths of hair start generally from blades size# 7 and downward in numerical numbering.
Blade sizes #40 to size #8.5 are of one style but varying cutting depths generally, and it is usual for them to have a smooth back on the lower plate.
From blade size 7 to the last blades in the range - which may be a 3 or ¾ size, the blades generally split into two distant types - the "full" tooth style blade or the "skip" tooth blade.
A "skip" tooth blade is a blade were the teeth of the lower plate (comb) alternate from one long with one short across the cutting face. This allows for a "scissoring effect when applied rather than a smooth finish. Often referred to as a "blending" blade.
A "full" tooth blade, is one marked "F" after the blade size number, or in some cases "FC" is a "full" or "full cut" blade indicating that it gives a smooth velvet style finish when used.
Thus blades marked as "#7" will invariably be a skip tooth blade, whereas a blade marked #7F or #7FC will be a full tooth blade.
Both "full" tooth blades and or "skip" tooth blades may be ribbed or have a plain surfaced on the lower blade plate. Some manufacturers claim the ribbed effect helps to keep the blade cooler.
A "corduroy" marked effect can sometimes be seen on a smooth coat such as a horse when a ribbed blade is used. Its effects are short termed however and usually disappear within 24/48hrs of being clipped.
The mm depth cutting size can, and may, often vary by a small amount from one manufacturer to another.

Surgical blade
Veterinary practices - widely used for surgical and laboratory work.
Cattle - will give a very close finish and is used for trimming dairy cattle udders, or preparing the show "top-lines" Used for freeze branding preparation.
Charollias sheep - show trimming of heads to remove small areas of both hair and wool, also for cleaning legs for show purposes.
Dog grooming - when used by a competent groomer/experienced exhibitor it produces a quality show finish (very close) on the face, feet or tails of a Poodle with excellent skin and coat qualities.
For those who do their own Poodle tail docking the tail is clipped at a pre-determined length using the #40 blade to prepare the area for docking.
Very useful blade for preparing the underbelly of a pregnant bitch just before delivery, the blade is used to skim the area clean providing the skin underneath has no abrasions. Useful blade when used on a number of mixed breeds. Dogs should be well groomed out before clipped.
A range of attachment combs can be used.

Close blade

Often used in dog grooming circles on the face and feet of either a black or brown Poodle.
It can be used with a clip on blade attachment for the removal of excess body coat, and is also used on Schnauzer ears.
Use the blade with a comb attachment to achieve a nice finish to a Poodle with a longer coat or to give the appearance of a hand scissored look on a mixed breed or a long coated terrier.
A wide range of attachment combs can be fitted over these blades to provide increased cutting length. Comb attachments should only be used on well-groomed coats and not those, which are tangled or matted.

Medium blade
All Oster "detachable blades" are made in the USA using high carbon steel to give an extended cutting life.
When used against the grain this blade gives a closer cut than the #30 blade. It produces a really nice finish on the top of the head and back of the neck of a densely coated Schnauzer, but the finish is too close for the Schnauzer bodywork.
Works well on Terrier ears when working with the lay of the coat. Good blade to use when dealing with mats that are packed tight to the skin. Work of this nature must however be done slowly and with considerable care.
It will easily skim the coat from the under belly and topside inside of the back legs on any breed.
Often said to be the most versatile dog blade of all, in the USA it is the firm choice for most dog grooming contests.
Widely used in many of the various Poodle clips:-
Dutch clip: feet/face/eyes/side-stomach/tail.
Kennel & Lamb clips: face/feet/tail.
Puppy clip: face/feet/tail.
Royal Dutch clip: face/feet/tail and a wider strip down the side and possibly the back.

NB for Poodles with sensitive skins use a Oster #10 for the face.
The #15 blade is also used on Bedlinton Terriers, Border Terriers, Irish Water Spaniels, Keeshond, Old English Sheep Dogs and Yorkshire Terriers

Medium general purpose blade
A highly popular blade for use for general and underbody use on a wide variety of dog breeds and is often selected when a reasonably close and or smooth finish is required. Most professional dog groomers will have this blade and probable use it the most within their day to day work.
A good blade use when going with the grain of the coat on the faces or light coloured Poodles, which are easily irritated. Used for the under belly work and also on the ears of terriers. Often selected as the blade to use when stripping off coats which have mats that are to close to the skin to permit the use of other blades. Universally used for body work on the Schnauzer.

Medium blade

Clip with this blade with the grain of the coat and you will get a slightly longer coat length finish than if you had used the #10 but shorter than a #8.5.
A good blade to use when clipping the crown of the head and arch of the neck of a Cocker Spaniel. Also well worth using on the cheeks and front of the neck of sensitive Poodles to produce a very effective finish.

Medium blade

Often referred to in grooming circles as a "terrier" blade. It is also a very good blade for use in cases when a longer coat length is desired on the bodywork of the Schnauzer and is very effective on older dogs of this breed where the coat is starting to thin.
If a close finish is needed on the bodywork for a Mixed Breed this blade cuts close without denuding the dog. This blade could also be used for stripping extremely matted coats. The #8.5 blade can be used for various areas of the body on the Brussels Griffon, Cairn Terrier, and Cocker Spaniel (American).
On the Airedale the #8.5 blade can be used from the base of the skull, down along the back to the base of the tail. Used also to clip down the neck and shoulder, and often at the back end.

Skip tooth body blade

The closest of the "skip" tooth blades; it is often used when it becomes necessary to strip down a dog. Groomers will find it extremely effective when used in situations where it is desirable to blend the coat from a close work area into a flowing longer coat texture. Makes a useful blade for a short Terrier finish.

Full tooth body blade

#7F blade is used to give a smooth finish after stripping and as such is an ideal blade for the purpose. It will also leave a beautifully smooth look to the body and legs on a "summer" clip. Many professional groomers will use this blade for the top back work on a Cocker Spaniel. Used on the Schnauzer it will leave a longer textured look when used for the bodywork especially if the dog has a thick cottony coat. On the Poodle it can be used against the lay of the coat for the front neck and if used on the cheeks it will help prevent abrasion on sensitive skins.

Skip tooth blade

The #5 skip tooth blade gives a nice finish on the Wire, Welsh and Lakeland Terriers, and is also used on occasions where a short finish is required on the backs of the West Highland White Terrier. Can also be used for a raking effect to blend the coat. However be warned this requires a steady hand and plenty of practice!.
This blade is used for bodywork on the Schnauzer breeds. Used on body sides for Giant and Standard - on the flanks for the Miniature.
Comb attachments are not usually fitted to this type of blade nor are they consider suitable.

The #4 skip tooth is regularly used for bodywork on long legged Terriers and for blending purposes. It can also be used as a raking blade on the shoulders and hip area of the coat of a Westie. The skip tooth blades has a total of 17 teeth on the comb blade of which 8 protrude out in line with the blade edge and the remaining 9 are angled down to aid increased hair penetration. A good blending blade.
The #3 skip tooth blade is the largest of all the skip tooth blades within the range and leaves a generous 13mm/1/4inch length often relieving the need for further use with a comb attachment. For this reason it has become popular with many groomers as they become aware of the blade.
Fitting a normal comb attachment is not possible on this blade due to the thickness of the comb blade.

Toe blade
All Oster "detachable blades" are made in the USA using high carbon steel to give an extended cutting life. These blades of which there are three sizes #5/8 #7/8 and #8/8 are in the main used for the purposes of designing pattern trims.
Ideal for close cutting for trims and finish purposes, they vary only in the cutting width which in the case of the #5/8 is five eighths of an inch. When used they will resemble the#15 as far a cutting depth is concerned, and if applied against the grain of the coat will represent the cut of the #30 blade.
Many groomers will use them for the feet of many breeds especially Poodles, and they are popular for use on Schnauzer ears and for the top and around the nose area of the Poodle muzzle.
