BASIC GUIDELINES FOR USING A CLIPPER on your cat.
Intended for those contemplating undertaking clipping for the first time!
If you are the owner of a long-haired cat it is highly probable you will have at some time to undertake clipping off its fur or if you feel not confident enough to take the animal to a professional, either a groomer or your vet surgery if they undertake such work!
Not all do, as cats are less inclined to "come quietly" compared to most dogs!
Most owners should at least attempt the task, because if done correctly then it is clearly less stressful for the "moggie" to have a "shave" in its own home environment, rather than motor down to the local "barbers" - the car journey alone being stressful.
First make sure you get the right type of machine, avoid the Multi Pet type at £29.99 clippers with all the pictures of animals from mice to elephants - they will not do the job as quiet a few folk quickly find out after visiting the local pet store or shopping mall!
Rest assured what you need undisputedly is a clipper onto which you can fit a "detachable blade!" - the simply fact is they cut the fur and can be selected to clip at a predetermined depth! They are the type of blade either the vet or your groomer would use.
Before you get into a "physical" embrace with your moggie, it is often a good idea to allow the cat to get used to the sound of the machine before you apply it
How you prepare your cat for the "pleasure" of being clipped will depend to a large degree on the placid nature of your moggie or otherwise! A fast rotating bundle of snarling teeth and claws may necessitate strategically rethinking your mode of "attack!"
A last resort for the " No way am I being clipped!" Moggie is to have a second pair of hands in the form of an assistant available who you get to hold the cat by its scruff with both front feet off the ground, this immobilises the moggie (hopefully) whilst you perform great skills "sculpturing" the fur to the selected style. Some cats can become a bit stressed so keep a watchful eye!
Sedation is a possibility. If you place the cat in the vets care, it will be sedated - out for the count - and wake up naked as a result of a size #40 surgical, a vest and pants might seem a good gift at this point!
Only ever clip a cat, which is dry and clean. Ideally before you clip any animal fully, it helps if it has been bathed and thoroughly washed using a good quality animal shampoo. Not always possible or in some cases desirable with cats, however if you do wash then work the shampoo well into the fur when suitably cleansed, do make sure you rinse well with clean water being careful to remove any shampoo still deep in the fur. Towel the cat dry if you do not possess a dryer, otherwise dry thoroughly with a warm air dryer suitably positioned to dry the animal without causing it distress.
When using a clipper if it is a mains appliance ensure the cable is clear of any obstacles and not in the way of your feet. Get yourself well organised, and have a safe and secure place to put the machine when not in use even if only for a few moments. Many clippers are fitted with a "hanging loop" Use it and hang your clipper up when not using it! A clipper, which accidentally falls to the ground, may easily result in either a broken blade, broken casing, or internal damage all of which apart from terminating the clipping, can also be costly!
Ideally clip the cat on some table, which is comfortable to use, and a height that does require you to do a lot of bending over. This can result in unpleasant backache later! During the operation of "actual" clipping, keep your wrist flexible and relaxed. This is very important because if the animal should suddenly decide to move whilst you are in the process of clipping, fur removed from the wrong place, or worse, a cut to the cat's body may result. Always keep the face of the blade "flat" to the body. DO NOT attempt to clip half way up the fur! Never attempt either to angle or dig into the skin with the machine. Allow the clipper to do the work and don't be in a hurry! Rushing invariably results in an accident!
Listen to the clipper, if the tone of the motor changes, more oil may be required. If the blades suddenly start to chatter you may be trying to go through the fur too fast. If the blades appear to refuse to cut into the fur try drawing back and re-approach the fur again but this time in a slower manner. Blades can refuse to cut for a number of reasons; often one single strand of fur trapped between the two blades (cutter and comb) can stop the cutting action.
The popular clip - often referred to as the "Lion cut" is applied to all areas of the body other than the head, the ruff or mane, the legs, back and front and the tip of the tail - everything else being shaved bare! This has the immense benefit of reducing the heat factor in summer, helps to prevent hairballs, and is more hygienic in the case of entire male cats.
Once you and your cat have recovered from the initial shock resulting from a "shave" the popular description after a few days is "adorable!" as the cat starts to look really rather smart!
When clipping always follow the grain of the fur unless otherwise so instructed. Going against the grain will result in a finished cut half of the depth for which the blade is selected. For example a #10 - 2mm blade would give a finish cut of not 2mm but 1mm!
On older cats or those, which have excess fat or conversely are extremely thin "stretch the skin with your hand as this will make clipping both easier and far safer for the cat. If you do not, you may easily cut the surface!
A few golden rules are:
1. Keep the clipper blade head flat to the body.
2. Do not attempt blade entry into the fur at some half-way point in its length, blades do not cut successful that way.
3. Clip in an organised direction or pattern.
4. Note items of importance - at least to the cat!
certain "bits" can get removed by accident!
5. Cats who are thin or older of for whatever reason a bit skinny or wrinkled, stretch the skin as you clip - makes for a smoother surface.
6. If previously washed make sure the cat is TOTALLY dry before you start clipping.
7. As most cat whatever their nature are normally not enthralled at the invitation to be clipped when you have completed the task, assuming you cat has not taken one look in the mirror, vowed to have it revenge on your furniture at the first opportunity and fled, a quiet moment with a plate full of its favourite treats might be a good reward! Tuna or smoked salmon are rarely turned down!
8. This is a task, which you are likely to find becomes a routine, so be mindful of every action you undertake, and try to make them all as pleasurable as possible for the cat!
9. After clipping discipline yourself to immediately cleaning both your clipper and the blades used. Not only is this a good and sensible practice, but it will over the years also save you considerable sums of money on unnecessary repairs and other bills. Having suitable cleaned and re-oiled your machine and the blade next carefully put them away in a dry and secure place.
10. Lastly! NEVER lend your clipper to a friend! - whatever the reason!

The "economy" priced clipper - perfectly respectable and suitable for most long haired cat owners, but just remember the motor is only 20w so it is the lowest powered of the selection on offer. Still that apart a good little clipper!

A professional 35w machine very typical of what you would find in many cat groomers parlours. Nice and slim, easy to use. Takes a range of blades to suit all your needs.
Moser Max 45
German made, - a quality professional 45w machine with the added advantage of two speeds - the slower being very useful if your cat is displaying "anti" being clipped vibes. (Use Moser rather than Wahl blades for the best results!)

EQUINE OWNERS:
Whilst projected at the dog grooming market, the equine owner with a clipper shy horse the FAV5 must surely be the answer to your clipping nightmare! At lasts a professional and powerful small clipper with a level of working noise that most horses will not freak over.
On all our extensive tests on nervous horses whether hairy cobs or natives we found the smooth and soft noise of the clipper blades when operating plus the lack of any vibration made for a more contented horse and a stress freer operator. It is important the operator acquires knowledge of the various detachable wide blades which are suitable for the task in hand. Seek advice - blade knowledge is important!
Our own field trials suggest convincingly that both the Moser 2.3mm standard #10 wide and the Aesculap 2.4mm standard full wide #10 blade are the blades best suited to equine full body clipping, whist other may give a result these two blades have proved to date highly successful.
It is worth mentioning that the mode or manner in which the operator uses the machine - is - crucial to the quality of the performance and clip. It is "essential" the operator takes a "relaxed" approach to the clipping task, does not rush the clipping and at all times allows the machine to glide through the coat, rather than attempting to push the clipper. This must be emphasised at the start!
Other factors such as individual length of cut is crucial - short lengths produce far better results than clipping in long "lawn mower" stripes. Criss cross clipping action in confined areas rather than open up extensive areas give a more professional finish. At all times the blade face must be flat to the animal's body surface.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
A really nice compact professional type American designed pet clipper ideal for either longhaired cat or dog owners. Dog owners with those breeds, which require fairly extensive clipping, especially those such as Spaniels, Poodles and Terrier breeds with find this machine highly attractive to their purposes. Most of the clipper and its parts are manufactured in the USA, a few minor items overseas.
This is the ideal clipper for the pet owner with an pet of any of the breeds, which require clipping including those mentioned above - it will, with good end user skills, produce a very professional result! If you have several cats or dogs and feel you need a more powerful machine then consider the next model up in the range - the more powerful 35watt Andis AGC single speed, or maybe the AGC two speed model.
Do not be tempted to get the traditional "Multi Pet" type clippers - whilst attractive by price and with packaging which suggests a capability beyond their limits - for the dog or cat breeds that need clipping you really need to be able to access the "detachable" blade range to tackle the job satisfactorily. The initial cost maybe higher but you will soon appreciate the added investment once you start to clip!
The MBG 2 with the ability to fit the important detachable type blades, as distinct from the "screw on" type blades, means that you can achieve the same quality of finish as when you take your dog to a professional grooming parlour, but at a more affordable cost. Access to the "detachable" blades alone in our opinion places this clipper above its peers - most of which are of the "screw on" blade type. The MBG2 has no competitor in its class, and like its predecessor is unrivalled!
Good design features including a comfortable slender handpiece give a combination of balance and lightness. Blade attachment is easy to operate, smooth and crisp. Under prolonged use the 20w motor remains cool running, with an acceptable noise level and very little hint of vibration. The on/off switch is well placed for easy operation in an emergency. Ideal for use on a range of other small animals and veterinary tasks.
The Andis blade range offers a complete and probably the most comprehensive coverage for most grooming situations. Those making a change of machine will find the Andis MBG2 Pet-Pro equally at home with Oster or indeed most other makes of detachable blades. If you are seeking alternative detachable blades take a look at the superior Aesculap and Moser blades both made in Germany using tradition German steel and craftsmanship.
The Andis MBG2 is supplied in a tailor made plastic carry case, with various partitions for neatly repacking you clipper and blades plus accessories after use. It comes with a selection of four attachment combs ranging from 1/8th - ¼ - 3/8th - and ½-inch plus a small tube of lubricating oil (You will need to buy an additional small bottle of oil as the tube supplied will see you though probable no more than one full clip!()
Altogether a very nice machine which will more than fulfil the needs of the average domestic pet owner seeking to keep their animal presentable whether for health or fashion purposes.

Compact, well engineered, and professional, with design features incorporating an attractive slim shaped handpiece gives a combination of balance and lightness, to ensure the operator a comfortable clipping operation.
Identical to the AGC two-speed model, but with just the single speed, which operates at a very respectable 2700 cutting strokes per minute this is a professional clipper totally at home in any busy grooming parlour conditions. Equally an excellent choice for any dog owner who is involved in semi serious clipping of breeds such Spaniels, Poodles or Terrier breeds.
Blade attachment is easy to operate, smooth and crisp. Under prolonged use the motor remains cool running, with an acceptable noise level and little vibration, making this clipper a good choice for any really busy dog-grooming parlour. Cleaning and servicing the head has been made easy by good and thoughtful design. Low maintenance is a feature of this machine. Locking device for on/off switch is a bit of a fiddle and slightly annoying. The on/off switch position is just about accessible in an emergence situation; we would have preferred it higher up!

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The Max 45 is one of the most powerful dog clippers on the market. Made and assembled in Germany this is one of the "stars" from the House of Moser, and it has all the superior qualities associated with a German built product.
Lightweight, low noise level, virtually no vibration, slim and comfortable to hold and use, it will power away for hours without any sign of overheating provided it is properly and regularly lubricated.
Equipped with an efficient two-speed 45w motor it is powerful enough to be often used as a "full body" horse clipper (using the Wahl/Moser 2.3mm wide blade) as well as professional dog-grooming machine. Like its predecessor the Moser KM1, it has quickly built a reputation for hard work and reliability, and as such has a popular following in dog grooming circles.
The attractive style of the newly designed casing enhances a shapelier handpiece, giving an added combination of balance and lightness. A number of features will put this machine into a superior category, especially the ability to operate at two speeds and over prolonged periods without any signs of overheating. With a very acceptable noise level it is almost vibration free.
Due to the cool running motor it is a natural choice for busy professional dog grooming parlours, and will accept "snap-on" Oster blades as well as most other types of detachable blades. Several of the new Moser CeraBlades, which are ceramic coated and said to remain sharper longer, are also suitable and can be fitted to this clipper. Moser Max 45/Avalon/Artiko clippers are now supplied with a improved drive leaver (Part number KM1245-7140)which has a red drive tip In with the accessories are two spare drive tips and a drive tip removal tool.
In keeping with most clippers an element of routine maintenance is required to maintain the clipper in peak performance. Drive tips do wear with constant use and clipper performance may become affected as a result - therefore routine checking of the tip for wear and if found subsequent replacement is recommended.
This is a routine job which most owners would find well within their ability and requires no additional special tool.
