Sheep Hand Shears

Burgon & Ball Sheep hand shears are the finest made shears in the world - a fact acclaimed by flock persons internationally.

They are still made from quality Sheffield steel for which a premium price is paid in order to maintain the history of quality, for which Burgon & Ball have become famous for over the years.

The same age-old principles of manufacture are continued with many of the manufacturing processes being still conducted by hand, and by professionals who have been with the company for many years.

You may observe slight differences in individual shears, this is due to the hand made process and represents part of the individual quality which is not to be found in the often cheaper alternative makes. Cheapness may have its attractions but normally at a cost, usually in the area relating to quality!

Recently Burgon & Ball have adopted a process of shot blasting their shears to increase resistance to rust and to provide a better base for the painted areas. This process may affect the appearance compared to old shears.

We regret to have to say in our opinion Burgon & Ball hand shears whilst still in many ways excellent, are not all made to the high standard one was once accustom to, certain not as in the days when we exhibited. Some customers in recent years have returned production line models fresh from the Burgon & Ball factory complaining about the quality.

We have noticed some tips are badly forged, the occasional uneven length of blades, and the finish of the steel blades appearing uneven and in some cases undulating in the tip ends. Weaker bows leading to more frequent re- setting are the main criticism. In fairness most B & B hand shears still cut and cut well! However as ex show people we understand fully the need for quality tools when doing show preparation!

We have raised the matter with Burgon & Ball and had conversations with senior staff, but have not received to our mind a suitable explanation. We can therefore only apologise for the differing quality, which may occur from time to time. We do sort out ant bad ones and return them as unsuitable, but would say in fairness Burgon & Ball are still by far the best of what is available - even if, not today what they were years ago!

Please note that all models of the "Super Shear" blade tips do not close together until normal cutting/trimming hand pressure is applied, due to the rubber stops in the upper part of the handle. This is perfectly normal and not a fault!

You will only find a comprehensive range of hand shears offer by Burgon & Ball and certainly in the UK well over 90% of all sheep prepared for Agricultural Shows will have been trimmed by a Burgon & Ball Shear!

Sheep shears are designed to last, but they do require careful treatment whether used for dagging or for show trimming. Cleaning after use and oiling before storage will preserve the blades from rust which is often quick to get established especially if the shear is used for dagging. Manure affects steel very quickly. Blades once "pitted" with rust can become difficult to maintain a good edge on.

Do not if possible drop your shears; even a fall of a few feet can cause the blades not to cut correctly. Above all do not commit the cardinal sin of pulling the blades wide apart to sharpen. This is totally un-necessary! To sharpen blades, simply part the two blades so they are slightly "ajar" and then reverse the blades over each other, which will reveal the cutting edge for sharpening.
The blade edges can be "honed" up with the use of a Burgon & Ball pocket shear sharpener and it is a good way to keep a sharp edge on your blade. The "stone" in the pocket sharpener is set to the angle the blade leave the factory so as always to fit the blade face and maintain the blade angle.

Periodically shears still need to be professionally re-sharpened and very often need to be "re-set" professionally to maintain peak performance.

A popular shear with those who still hand shear show or other sheep.

Price:   £29.50 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

REGULATOR BOW SHEAR - 6.5-inch REGULATOR BOW SHEAR - 6.5-inch
Product code: 1606

A 6.5-inch double "regulator" bow heavy-duty general-purpose shear made by Burgon & Ball from quality Sheffield steel.

A simple tension nut adjuster set in the bow allows for the stiffness of the blade "squeeze" to be regulated between that of a standard double bow shear and a single bow.

Like the Incurved Bow shear these larger bladed shears are ideal for those who still hand shear show or as a farm "general purposed" shear for use on medium to large breeds.

Although larger bladed both the Incurved and Regulator Bow shears are some of the best shears available and ones which rarely need frequent re-setting.

Price:   £25.00 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)
