+ Great concept! Super to clip with. Very lightweight and quiet!

- Might appear cumbersome with a flexible cable at first until you get use to it!

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
A professional flexi drive shaft driven horse/dog clipper from made by Double K Industries of the USA.

Not the type of machine you see frequently in use, but that has more to do with marketing than any question of products fault! Talk to anyone who has one, or has used a friends - they all tell you the same - "a super machine, wonderfully quiet, really easy to handle and so reliable!"
Certainly not one we see being repaired very often -compare to many others!

Aimed at the dog groomer and horse owner market this is a machine manufactured in the USA and designed to use all makes of "detachable" A5 type blades. The handpiece bears a similar resemblance to the Oster A5 machine in shape and size; however that's when the resemblance stops - the Oster having become rather known for its frequent overheating, this machine is beautifully cool running!

Sadly too many people perceive the concept of the solid state cable (flexible shaft) as being "awkward" to use. In fact this is purely a preconceived and totally inaccurate perception which really is quiet wrong. Ask any farmer shearing sheep with a suspended shearing machine using either a solid or flexible shaft and they will all tell you how incredibly easy it is! After the initial feeling maybe of a degree of strangeness when first used it soon becomes wonderful easy and is a very relaxed way to clip.

The idea of no trailing cables especially when clipping horses is a pleasant relief for most people, and allows you to relax and enjoy the business of clipping rather than have the constant concern as to where the cable is!

One can see the value of this powerful clipper when used clipping horses or alpacas - having the power unit clipped to ones belt and the very low noise level together with the excellent power make it a very desirable tool for clipping or shearing of the heavy coats!

The different - non-conventional way of clipping, no cables but using a flexible drive shaft is in the same way identical to shearing sheep, and a system that has been employed for many decades. The motor control box is worn off the belt, but can if preferred be hung from a beam or ceiling point. The cable from the control box to the converter unit is just under 11-feet (3.3m.)

The detachable blade is fitted on to a protruding tongue, known as the "hinge" with the motor in an "off switch position. The blade is then snapped back against the clipper head to engage. Many users may find it more convenient to snap the blade back with the motor running at the slow speed. The motor once switched on automatically engages the blade for a smooth clipping operation.

The blade is easy to released - with the motor switched off - you simply press the blade release clip and holding it fully depressed whilst pulling the blade gently back off the clipper head and then lifting off the metal "tongue" of the hinge.

The blue control case containing the motor has a small dial, which allows for the adjustment of the motor speed. Starting from the "low" speed point the clipper has ten increasing speed levels finishing at the "High" point. Throughout the various speeds the clipper is remarkably quiet whilst generating a feeling of power.

The variable speed adjustment dial is a valuable facility especially when clipping some large animals, or those who display a nervous tendency toward being clipped. By starting at the lower speed, one can increase by as many as ten stages to the maximum power output, although most end users prefer one speed - the fastest!

In an emergency or when not clipping an easy to fit in "clip" in which to slot the machine is attached to the motor casing, and safeguards it from accidental damage.

Dog groomers will find a convenient method of clipping is to suspend the motor unit from a fixing point of either on a grooming table "H" frame or a control arm. With the flexible shaft round the rear of you, the handpiece can be operated with total ease. The other option is to wear it off your belt, which horse and alpaca-clipping operators will find a convenient way to operate the clipper.

Those who have clipped with conventional style clippers and cable may find the more ridged shaft slightly off putting to start with, but once one has persevered you soon appreciate the values of this shaft driven way method and the added power provided!

Once you have a few miles under your belt you will love it!!

Should you be ordering this machine please remember the clipper is not supplied with a blade allowing for the flexibility of use.

If you are intending to use it to clip horses, or alpacas then we would strongly suggest you select either the Aesculap wide 2.4mm or Moser wide 2.3mm detachable blades for optimum performance. Several of the narrow blades are suitable for areas such as hogging or fetlocks.

PLEASE NOTE:
This product is supplied with an American 2-pin moulded plug in the converter lead. A 3-pin electrical adapter plug is supplied for the UK market. The 3-pin system is only for use in the UK only - for European or International use a further adapter is required which is not supplied with the charger unit.

Adapters of this nature can be usually purchased from any electrical outlet in the country for which it is intended to use the product.

Customers from the USA should be aware that 240v machines are not suitable for the US electrical power supply. Clippers specifically made to 110v are need for the USA.

SUITABLE BLADE RANGES:
This clipper is not supplied with a blade owing to the fact that as it accepts all detachable A5 type and whatever blade it was packaged with is not likely to be the most preferred one.

This clipper takes all ANDIS/AESCULAP/MOSER/OSTER/LAUBE/THRIVE/WAHL detachable A5 blades.

For full body clipping of either horses or alpacas, we recommend you to purchase the Moser 2.3mm WIDE detachable blades, which we considered more suited to horse coats of most breeds.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

+ As one of the few cordless professional small animal clippers with two batteries available we rate this the best we have seen and tested to date. Fast re-charge time. Very compact unit! Constant reliability! Excellent value considering the quality and available alternatives!

- Hard really to find much to criticise - maybe a larger blade release lever would have been more user friendly - although in fairness it compares well with other makes ! The On/off switch could be more accessible.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION :
When we saw the "Saphir" for the first time at the major German Trade Fair "Interzoo" in 2008 we felt we were looking at a machine that had an ability to bring a new bench mark to the world of the cordless machine.

Several months later when we received a production model to try and test - many veterinary practices all over the UK confirmed our suspicions - a potential winner!

All the vets who tested the machine asked the same question - how soon can you supply one!
Heiniger are renowned Internationally for their large animal clippers and perhaps even more so for the high quality shearing equipment they manufactures, so say nothing of probably manufacturing one of the most comprehensive cutter and comb blade range designed for every shearing possibility.

In over two decades we have seen Heiniger establish themselves in the UK - both in the field of sheep shearing and also in the equine world, facing strong traditional competition, to become one of the leading players in the UK market, and a major International manufacturer both in respect of sheep shearing and large animal clipping.

The "Saphir" we feel confident will very soon establish Heiniger as the first choice amongst the many veterinary practitioner seeking reliability and quality combined! Hopefully the same machine may one day emerge in the form of a corded machine - projected at the professional dog groomer. Certainly when others of it calibre fall short of these very basic requirements - it set new bench marks for quality and reliability which will be eagerly grasped by the veterinary end user.

Whilst cordless clipper are not always the preferred choice amongst professional dog groomers with the vast majority selecting the corded models, the "Saphir" will no doubt be a serious contender with the many mobile groomers and those domestic pet owners who prefer cordless to mains.

The nervous horse owner may well find interest in this machine also and assuming the Heiniger wide blade is proved to be suitable for most horse coats or they select and use the already proven Moser #10 2.3mm wide blade we have every reason to expect satisfaction.

Features including the low noise level plus relative none existence of vibration will be especially appealing to the end user. When doing the fetlocks or hogging try switching to a #40 or #30 blade for those denser and more coarse areas and clip freestyle to avoid going to close. An attachment comb could be considered.

The "Saphir" is delightfully lightweight - a mere 0.44kg - even with battery attached, nice and compact - under 205mm/8-inches including a narrow blade attached , comfortable to both hold and operate whether in a male or female hand - the clipper body casing having been shaped to give a slimmer grip just were you hold it! The powerful 35 watt motor has soft motor note that is instantly associated with high quality engineering of the Germanic type. Free of vibration its single speed motor provides 2650 double cutting strokes per minute.

As a veterinary clipper it will invariably be judged against the Oster Power Pro Mk II - the clipper almost universally used by UK vets! Sadly the new Mk II Oster has not in our experience proved to be reliable in so far as the battery unit has been concerned especially!

Many vets have experienced frustration as well as additional expense when discovering Mk I batteries would not fit the new Mk II battery charger with expensive knock on costs if your Mk I charger failed and you had to replace it! If that was not bad enough one too often found the battery failed to charge correctly!

Another annoying feature - although in fairness most vets accepted it - probably due to no alternative - the Power Pro is noticeably heavy and slightly unbalanced when connected to either Mk I or Mk II batteries
Now there is an alternative - the "Saphir" has a lightweight battery at 100grams compared to the Oster battery at twice the weight (200grams)

The "Saphir" from the end user perception has to be the nicer balanced machine to use! The operating feel of the "Saphir" is robust powerful and professional - it offers a confident clip whether surgical or more prolonged. One critical observation - the rear mounted switch is not in our favourite position for an emergency stop! We would have preferred the switch to be more accessible.

The "Saphir" is powered by a lightweight Lithium-ion batteries - it is supplied with two for continuous clipping. Each battery has a clip time of 50 minutes with a fast re-charge time of 45 minutes

Lithium-ion batteries (sometimes abbreviated Li-ion batteries) are a type of rechargeable battery in which lithium ion moves between the anode and cathode. The lithium ion moves from the anode to the cathode during discharge and in reverse, from the cathode to the anode, when charging.

Lithium ion batteries are common in consumer electronics and are one of the most popular types of battery for portable electronics, with one of the best energy-to-weight ratios; they have no memory effect and a slow loss of charge when not in use.

The light and compact charger unit provides two charging bays. If the clipper is placed in the charging bay, (Bay with raised back surround.) the charger will charge the clipper. The spare battery in its charging bay however will not be charged. Remove the clipper from its charging bay, the charger will then charge the spare battery. A red led light indicating charging is in progress, a green led light indicating charging has completed. In the rear of the charger casing slots enable it to be wall mounted if required

Unlike some other machines a separate car charging unit is considered not necessary. With two batteries, you have a total of about 100 minutes clipping time - each battery lasting just under one hour.

If a vet starts with two freshly charged batteries in the morning he/she should come through the day without experiencing charging problems.

As with most detachable blade taking machines the "Saphir" can be used with any of your existing detachable A5 type blades including those of Oster, Andis, Aesculap, Moser and Wahl manufacture, as well as the newly created range of fifteen blades currently available from Heiniger which closely mirror the Oster range in the various sizes.

Supplied without a blade in consideration that most end user purchasing this excellent machine will most likely already have their own detachable blades, the Heiniger range offers two surgical type blades - a size #50/0.4mm and a size #40/0.8mm. Sizes #30/0.8 and #15/1.5mm. A popular size #10/1.8mm and both sizes #9/2mm and #8.5/2.8mm. Body blades include skip tooth and full blades in sizes #7/3.2mm, #5/6mm and #4/9.5mm. A toe blade - size #5/8 at o.8mm and a wide blade #10W/2.3mm.

Additional blades to the range may follow in the future.

Heiniger detachable blades are made to a high standard backed with many years experience of successful blade manufacture and are supplied in a satin steel finish. Packaging is innovative with information on compatibility, blade use and size.

Most of the standard "snap on" type attachment comb can be fitted to blades from blades size #50 to size #8.5. Blades of all makes below this size do not accept attachment combs, due to the increasing size of the comb blade. Also combs will not fit the "detachable" wide type blades as used for large dog breeds or for full body horse clipping.

The purpose of the attachment comb is to leave a greater length of un-cut hair than the blade alone would normally leave. It is important to remember however that if you use an attachment comb you must be very particular with the grooming of the coat. There MUST NOT be any tangles or knots - otherwise the comb may come off the blade, it may well refuse to pass through the hair, and the clipping process may be painful to the animal!

The "Saphir" comes packaged in a superbly laid out hard carry case - well designed and perfect for the "on the move" practitioner, for storage in surgery, or the mobile groomer, or pet owner - even down to three compartments to store your surgical or other blades! Few manufactures provide such refreshing attention to detail! One of the nice aspects of this well laid out case is that all the items store well in provided compartments - even down to the charger cable - usually impossible to pack away!

We were highly impressed with Heiniger consideration of consumer needs and especially their very precise and well written instruction manual text and supporting images all of which are done in a most informative and easily understood manner to embrace both the professional and novice user! This is refreshing to see at a time when many non professional are turning to the skill of clipping and fulfils the requirements of current UK legislation in safely standard.

PEASRIDGE CONCLUSION!
With a limited choice of professional 35watt cordless clippers currently available the appearance of the Heiniger "Saphir" will be eagerly welcomed by many veterinary practices who we feel sure will buy the Heiniger "Saphir" and will find they have made a sound investment!

For a long time the veterinary market has been starved of choice in the cordless field and Heiniger have surely recognised a gap in the market desperate for a new and reliable professional detachable blade using cordless clipper which would take the wide range of blades as might be found in existence in any normal busy veterinary practice.

Peasridge have over several months tested the "Saphir" with a variety of busy and large practices with a number of vets and nursing staff using the machine. We have shown it to a number of serious horse clipping owners, clipping for show or other specific purposes. All without exception have spoken highly of its performance, ease of use, power and battery qualities, using either their own blades or the supplied Heiniger blades.

It is with this practical experience of the Saphir and our long respect for Heiniger made clippers and blades that we have every confidence in commending this clipper to all - whether professional or pet owner.

+ Instantly impressive & innovative single speed cordless clipper ideal for the nervous horse owner, or mobile dog groomer.

- Limitation of choice of wide blades for horses. Rear positioned on/off switch.

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
An evolution of the already popular dog clipper - the Moser Max 45, but in a cordless type mode, with increased power and marketed under the Moser "Horseline" range
This concept of a really lightweight and remarkably powerful cordless machine will have an immediate attraction to many horse owners, especially those with nervous animals.

Moser - noted for prestigious German quality, have excelled in producing an innovative, lightweight and powerful battery pack intended to be worn off a waist belt or slipped into a coat pocket. With a two an a half hour clip time, and the facility of "detachable" blades - thus removing the necessity to tension - this machine will appeal to many.

With many features identical to the already popular Max 45 the clipper encompasses the attractive style of the shaped handpiece, giving a combination of balance and lightness plus all the superior qualities associated with a German built product. The noise level and vibration are especially low, and it has inherited the cool running features of all Moser machines.

Originally launched and supplied with a Cera ceramic coated blade thought to give a longer clipping life by retaining its sharpness, however evidence was to suggests this was not the case and there were difficulties in the re-sharpening process at factory level which lead to the blade being discontinued in August 2008.

The Moser steel standard 2.3mm size #10F (our code: CB0208) wide blades will cope with most horse coats, it has been widely tested over a good number years both in the UK and Europe. However due to the many breeds and resulting cross breeds occasionally one will meet with a coat texture which creates difficulties (for both "detachable" and traditional blades) and in some cases cannot be clipped with this type of blade. Unfortunately this is difficult to predict without first attempting to clip. Often in such cases trying the Moser steel "fine" version of 2.3mm size #10F (our code: CB0218) wide blade resolves the problem.

Any breed of horse may from time to time present a clipping problem, and clips may well vary from season to season. The skill of clipping is knowing how to approach such problems! This were the experienced operator has the advantage! When using "detachable" blade clippers a change in clipping attitude is needed! Fast clipping with long sweeping blows is OUT!

All you will achieve is a blade the teeth clogged with hair, and a good deal of frustration! Tramlines may appear as an added bonus!

Instead take a relaxed approach to the task, allow the machine to do the work, using your hand as a guide and not an instrument of pressure. By slowing down the speed at which you attempt to "push" the machine/blade through the coat hair you will achieve in most cases a perfect clip.

With sticky greasy areas success can often be achieved if you just "crawl" over the area thus avoiding the blades becoming clogged with hair. This may seem a bit of a "pain" but then presumably you are in the first instant using this type machine because a traditional machine is not for whatever reason acceptable to either you or your horse or both. Hence speed is not essential.

If this is not the case then clearly you should not be using the "Avalon" or similar type clippers, and should use a tradition heavy-duty unit. Having said thet tradition clippers can also experience similar problems

The ceramic-coated blade is not the same as the pure ceramic blade sets used by some of the dog groomers. This is a steel blade coated with ceramic powder, which as a result give increased performance and is said to stay sharper for longer. Subsequent lapping (sharpening) will wear away the ceramic coating in time, however one still has a very useful steel blade when this happens.

Horse users in particular will need to rethink the speed at which they clip when using this type of machine or indeed any clipper of the type fitted with "detachable" blades - whether ceramic or steel. You do need a relaxed approach to your clipping speed - if not tramlines will soon appear. Short strokes are better than longer ones, and work across the hair as well as with the "grain".

The main reason for this is the choice of wide blades available. Compared to the number of blades for dog grooming the choice is limited, particularly so when dealing with some of the more "hairy" and heavy coated native horse breeds! The Moser 2.3mm - CeraBlade or the 2.3mm steel wide blades - are often found to be the best currently available.

When using the "detachable" blade style clippers one should be aware no matter how good they are they are not of the same power as a typical traditional type machines. Invariably one is using this type of clipper because the horse objects for whatever reason to a traditional noisy machine. Seen in this role as an alternative to not clipping or heavy sedation they are extremely valuable and with proper use and application perform as well as any traditional clipper, producing some quality clips on a range of horse or cattle breeds.

Practical experience as with most clipping of any animal is invaluable! Knowledge is never complete - no matter how experienced the operator!

When doing full body clipping two blades are a wise precaution, just in case one suddenly goes blunt, which in fairness can happen with any make of clipper or blade! For cattle or horse's heads and intricate parts of the legs (udders in the case of dairy cows) one can select a suitable blade from an extensive range of "narrow" blades.

A RECENT CUSTOMER'S COMMENTS AFTER PURCHASING A MOSER "AVALON" !

I thought you would like to know that the clippers I ordered on Tuesday have proved to be a great success.

At the beginning of the week I attempted to clip a very nervous horse with my old Lister clippers - it took nearly 2 hours and a lot of gentle persuasion to achieve a small gullet clip!

I managed to complete a trace clip today in 45 minutes with my new 'Avalon' clippers - he showed no resistance to the noise or feel of the clippers, and only slightly shied away once when I swapped sides.

The clippers are very easy to use, and having followed your advice, I took my time over the job, using the short strokes as recommended.

Please pass my thanks to the gentleman that advised me on these clippers - I didn't take his name but his help was greatly appreciated,

F W of Welshpool. - 13/10/2006

+ One of the few cordless professional clippers with two batteries. Fast re-charge time. Very compact unit!

- Batteries seem to be "plagued" with faults! In many outlets only sold with one battery! Gets a touch expensive when you start to buy extras!!

GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The Oster Power Pro Mk2 certainly has a role for use on the nervous horse - small, nice to handle, compact and with low noise level plus relative low vibration.

We would recommend for full body horse clipping the Moser wide blade 2.3mm blade as one of the better blades for the many and various textures of coats likely to be experienced rather than the Oster matching wide blade.

When doing the fetlocks or hogging try switching to a #40 or #30 blade for those denser and more coarse areas and clip freestyle to avoid going to close. An attachment comb could be considered.

Introduced as the successor to the popular "green" bodied Mk 1 Oster Power pro (A few other colours existed as well) the clipper head and hand grip shape basically remains unchanged other than for the casing covering which has been clad with a pleasant soft "non slip" material with a rubberise feel. The new battery attachment is however slimmer and now follows the shape of the clipper. One instantly notices the improved balance the new styled battery affords compared to the rather poorly balance earlier Mk 1 model!

Clipper and battery are claimed to be around 15% lighter than the earlier model! Oster state that the clipper drive lever delivers a more powerful sweep as a result of being driven by a slightly more powerful motor - thus it is claimed the Mk2 clipper gives a greater and superior cutting performance! The benefit of this would presumably be particularly noticeable when clipping for example, a horse using a wide detachable blade.

Unlike the way it is normally supplied in the UK, we offer the Oster Power Pro complete with TWO batteries (In the US it is also sold with two batteries for continuous clipping!) We feel customers will require the same - continuous clipping facility - rather than have the added expense of purchasing an additional battery at the time of purchase or later!

Considering Oster still supply their mains powered A5 clippers in boxes, it is refreshing, to see a case of such quality being supplied with their cordless machine! The clipper is beautifully packaged in a spacious lightweight aluminium case - weighing fully loaded - clipper battery and accessories - a mere 2.4kg (if you buy from Peasridge due to the fact it is then supplied with not one but two batteries!) Carefully padded with foam cut out compartments (unlikely these will last long with normal use but they look good when new!) - both clipper and the entire accessories are stored safely. All very nicely designed and laid out!

Case dimension:
Height: Less than 12-inches/30cm allowing for the folded handle and locking catches
Length: Just over 11-inches/28.3cm
Depth: 4.75-inches/12cm
Un laden weight: approx 1.8kgs

The battery unit is said to be "improved" with the introduction of the new type of NIMH battery units. However it has to be said battery reliability on new models has been "disappointing" to date - resulting in the clipper being downgraded in our star assessment!

For those who want to know…………. the nickel-metal hydride battery, abbreviated NiMH, is a type of rechargeable or storage battery similar to another well know battery type the "Nickel-cadmium" (NiCd) but using a hydrogen-absorbing alloy for the negative electrode instead of cadmium. As in NiCd batteries, the positive electrode is nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) A NiMH battery can have two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size NiCd. However, compared to the lithium-ion battery the volumetric energy density is lower and self-discharge is higher.

It is said one useful feature of these batteries is they do not have the annoying memory feature as often common with some earlier types of batteries, but you will need to recharge and discharge these batteries several times before they reaches their "optimum" performance when first purchased! Also if the battery is not used for a period of time, or has been stored away unused re-charging will again be necessary.

Whilst the manufacturer claims the battery delivers "state of the art intelligence charging to maximum its working life, they do add that every few months if you are not a regular user you should switch on (remover the blade first) and run the clipper until the battery is fully discharged. Then recharge accordingly. This could well apply to horse owners, who engage in seasonal clipping with a long spell of in-action in between. If you are the typical busy dog groomer or veterinarian and use a cordless machine, well you probably need not bother!

When fully discharged the normal recharge time for the battery is between 50 and 60 minutes. You can check the running status of your battery at any time by placing it in the slot provided on the charger and observing the LED light in the centre.

LED light on the front alerts you to the state of play……….
Red light continuous - indicates re-charging is required.
Green light continuous - indicates the clipper now ready for use
Red blinking light - You need to invest in a new battery - Red light says - "kaput"

The charger is far more compact and smaller than the old black charger of the previous model, and the two slots for spare blades have been done away with! Of course this is all about a single battery so only one recharging slot also!

There is a connection point provided on the rear on the charger for a plug to power the recharge unit off any 12v supply such as in a vehicle. This is not currently available in the UK but expected shortly when it will be available as an optional extra - at extra cost!

A slot in the groove of the charger assists in ensuring the battery is correctly offered into the slot for recharging - so no fear of getting it incorrect! So easy you could do it in the dark!

As with the previous Mk1 model you can re-charge with the clipper handpiece attached to the battery or just the battery on its own. One small but useful as well as thoughtful addition to the charger unit is that a set of four tiny suction pad feet have been added to the underside of the charger to ensure it stays put and does not slip off a shelf or work surface!
