About blade sharpening

The BLADE is the most important part of a clipper!

The blade does the cutting!
The clipper (or trimmer) provides the power!

Too often the end user confuses one with the other - the result is often a perfectly good clipper is incorrectly blamed because the “blade” does not cut!!

There is more to blades and sharpening than most people appreciate!

Please read the following - it can have an important bearing on your blade's performance, and may may be helpful when choosing a blade for a specific task.

A blade is as good as the steel from which it is created!
The making of steel from which blades will eventually be created, is rather like cooking ingredients - the quality of the blade depends on the ingredients added to the steel during the making!

Solingen a city in North Rhein, Westphalia, German is often called the "City of Blades", since it has long been renowned for the manufacturing of fine swords, knives, scissors and razors made by many Internationally famous firms Traditionally the German’s have been making various forms of blades for just on a hundred years
.
As a consequence German made clipper blades made from Solingen steel rank as the best in the world.

Creating a blade from two pieces of steel takes many processes and passes through many complicated machines, each contributing to a part of the making process, before it is viewed as fit for the purpose of sharpening, tested and subsequent sale and use.

Bearing in mind the blade’s importance not only to the professional in keeping their business running, but equally to the domestic user whether a dog owner, equine owner or farmer the question of reliable blade sharpening (a routine requirement of virtually all makes or types of clipper or trimmer blades.) should be high in priority!

Sadly blade sharpening can often vary - and the results cause much frustration!

Correctly sharpened most blades can be re-sharpened many time and will give years of service. Blades with broken teeth should be discarded; indeed some may not be possible to sharpen.

As blades of all makes and types can and do frequently go blunt at a moment's notice irrespective of the make, one should never comence clipping without a spare freshly sharpen blade to hand. There are a number of contributing factors which increases the likelihood of a blade dulling and becoming blunt.

A clipper blade is no different to any other cutting edge whether it is a wood working chisel, dressmaking scissors, or a kitchen knife, the smallest contact with an abrasive matter in the coat and the cutting edge is lost!
.
Few horses are ever "clean" in the purest sense - no matter whether rugged or how well groomed - when compared to show cattle which are washed several times and blow dried with powerful blasters which "open" the coat before being clipped.

The increasing modern tendency to clip dogs before washing may have economic values in speeding up the grooming process but the down side is you can expect more frequent blade sharpening!

Correct tensioning of the blades which is something learnt as a result of using your clipper frequently - not just a few times a year, and frequent lubricating (oiling) will both contribute to longer blade performance.

Bearing in mind the importance of the blade and in recognition that untreated steel will easily rust keep your blades both clean and well-oiled after use. Rust and pitting of the steel surface causes problems with maintaining a sharp cutting edge. Whether in use or put away for re-use rust is preventable with a disciplined approach!

Blade sharpening is a considerable skill which takes several years to achieve if one is attempting to sharpen professionally the full range of blades which are used these days by all who clip. It is therefore very important that not only is the sharpener skilled but that the sharpening machinery is both suitable and correctly set up for the various blades it may be called upon to sharpen.

Far too often both the skill and the standard of machinery are sadly lacking and there are probably few persons who clip who have not experienced the effects of poor blade sharpening.

Cheap blade sharpening does not always deliver the "bargain" it suggests!

Never attempt to clip any animal large or small with only one set of blades. Always have a spare new or freshly sharpened set to hand in case they are needed!

Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW SHOULD I SEND MY BLADES FOR SHARPENING
The teeth of any blade are the venerable part - therefore take time to individually wrap them in some protective wrapping material such as "bubble wrap" and send them by mail in either a small padded "mail lite" type envelope, or small box.

If you plan to send a number of blades for sharpening use a suitable stout cardboard box and place your blades carefully packaged in some protective wrapping material.

Why is this important? Well both postal and carrier services internal handling is mechanised and not renowned for "tender care" - be warned - pack securely!

Please make sure all blades are clean and that any traces of animal hair have been removed.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU SUPPLY your full name, address (with post code) and either a land line or mobile telephone number and any e-mail address by which you can be contacted during day time hours.

Failure to do this may result in delays in your blades being sharpened and returned to you!

As blades are valuable and their replacement can be costly you may wish to consider using a postal service which provides insurance cover against loss. We would certainly recommend this for blades sent from overseas. Post and Carrier services offer insurance cover at an extra charge.
