BERGER HAND SHEARS from Germany

Show trimming shears - once the sole domain of Burgon & Ball with their famous red handled South African "Drummer Boy" or the professionals much favoured "Hindes Pattern" with its taper pointed tips, have in recent years become increasing more disappointing. Few in the boxes we get from B & B are anywhere near the standard of back in the 1980's and 90's and although we have made several representations to the B & B Management, the finished quality remains in our opinion very poor.

Sadly other makes are even less lack even the meagre standards of the Burgon & Ball standard, so it is refreshing to find in Germany there exists two shears, which as far as quality and cutting ability turn the clock back to the good old days when a hand shear was a tool of the highest quality.

The German "Berger" double bow hand shears are a superbly crafted tool - typically German made from Solingen steel, internationally famous for knives, scissors and many other items, they are manufactured by a small German engineering business. One is immediately struck by the quality of the blades and you don't need to be an expert on steel to realise this is the real stuff!

Sad to say the finish quality of the Berger shear only serves to show how sharp the decline of quality has become with the Burgon and Ball products. If you appreciate a fine quality tool, you will appreciate a Berger hand shear - it is superb!

For a nation, which hardly ranks as "Master show trimmers of sheep" they certain lack nothing when it come to design, quality and finish!

The double bow shears feel good in the hand, they nicely balanced and at a weight of 0.30kg one would feel comfortable in both the hand and wrist even after a prolonged trimming session.

As one who has professionally trimmed more sheep for shorn bare or full wool class than I care to remember, I would have no hesitation is saying if you appreciate a really good hand shear and will care for it - keep it free from rust, whether you show trim or just dag this German shear has to be one for your serious consideration.

Forget the fact it may cost a fraction more, - it pays to pay slightly more for "assured" quality!

Sheep hand shears whether for general-purpose work such as dagging or for the more specialised tasks involving high quality show trimming require to be of good quality if they re to give good performance

The German "Berger" double bow straight hand shear is a superbly crafted tool. Made by a small steel forging business from Solingen steel - an area famous for making knives, scissors and many other items, one is immediately struck by the quality of the blades and you don't need to be an expert on steel to realise this is the real stuff!

The double bow is of the strength Burgon & Ball shears once used to be, solid firm and with plenty of spring. Few of these German hand shears will ever require re setting as often as the current B & B ones do! The blade edge wide and full with a very slight curve as opposed to being totally flat.

Comparing the blades with those of B&B the impression is the German Berger shear is a heavier gauge of steel. Blades are ground to a perfect finished angle for a good glide, and are honed to give a razor sharp cut. The blade glide is perfection, as one would expect from quality German engineering. Both blades glide together with a ring of "steel on steel" - a quality so necessary in a good "trimming or dagging shear" Good blades must have that sound!

The overall length is 11-inches/28cm and blade trimming length 5.5-inches/14cm.
One might view a 5.5-inch blade as short compare to what has been the industry standard for the last twenty odd years, however as one who trimmed woolly show Romney's back in the 1970's and 80's we never used anything other than a good 5.5 inch B & B or a Maple's if you were fortunate enough to own one!

The double bow straight hand shear feels good in the hand, nicely balanced and at a weight of 0.30kg one would feel comfortable in both the hand and wrist even after a prolonged trimming session.

We feel this shear whether used for dagging, general trimming and tidying up purposes or for exhibition work will have great appeal to ladies. It handles with ease and is just the right size for the smaller hand. Ideal for the smaller sheep breeds, whilst equally as adaptable for use on those larger bred sheep!

We have no hesitation is saying if you appreciate a really good quality shear, are prepared care for it - keep it free from rust, whether you show trim or just dag this has to be one for your serious consideration. Forget the fact it may cost a fraction more, - it always pays to pay slightly more for quality!

We are delighted to add a larger bladed Berger hand shears ideal for either for general-purpose work such as dagging or for the more specialised tasks involving high quality show trimming - each having a slightly longer blade whilst giving the superb performance quality for which the Berger hand shear is fast becoming renowned!

Of the few makes of shears available on the market today the German "Berger" double bow straight and cranked hand shear are superbly crafted tool and probably today one of the best makes you can buy. Made by a small steel forging business from Solingen steel - an area famous for making many forms of knives, scissors and a raft of other steel and cutting items, one is immediately struck by the quality of the blades and more importantly the "finish. You don't need to be an expert on steel to realise this is the real stuff as of yester year!

The German forged double bow has all the strength Burgon & Ball shears once used to have a decade or more ago , solid firm and with plenty of spring. Few of these German hand shears will ever require re setting unlike the current B & B ones do! The blade edge is wide and full with a very slight curve as opposed to being totally flat - thus ensuring a good "ride" of both blade edges - and a resulting perfect cutting edge!
Another excellent feature is unlike many shears which have highly shiny steel blades - the first time they encounter rust - unless you are exceptionally disciplined (let face not all of us are!) corrosion sets in and from that day on blade sharpening. Berger shears are factory coated with a minimal steel face to rust.

Comparing the blades with those of B&B and a few other makes available, one get the immediate impression the German Berger shear use a heavier gauge of steel - hence the overall quality. Blades are ground to a perfect finished angle for a good glide, and are honed to give a razor sharp cut. The blade glide is perfection, as one would expect from quality "Solingen" German engineering. Both blades glide together with a ring of "steel on steel" - a quality vital in all shears but even more important in a good "show shear" Good blades must have that sound!

The overall length is 13.20-inches/22.20cm and blade trimming length 6.5-inches/16.5cm.

The double bow straight hand shear handles well as a show trimming shear, feels good in the hand, and is nicely balanced at a weight of 0.35kg - one would feel comfortable in both the hand and wrist even after a prolonged trimming session.

For those farmers who like a larger hand shear - whether used as a dagging, or general purpose tool it will prove highly adaptable and is ideal also for the many upland hill breeds as well as the many larger bred sheep! Also a good shear for those involved using sheep shears for industrial and construction purposes.

We have no hesitation is saying if you appreciate and prefer a really good quality hand shear, whether you are show trimming or just dagging "Berger shears" have to command your serious consideration. Forget the fact they may cost a fraction more, - it always pays to pay slightly more for quality!
As one who both remembers and used the fine quality of shears of 40/60 years or so ago, these strongly resemble those well made instruments!
